They returned to Auckland by way of the Waikato River, passing through Maungatautari and Waipa. The journal includes interesting descriptions of Maori life and Gisborne meet the Revs Brown, Spencer, Chapman and Ashville [sic] and various prominent Maori. Description: 'History of the Western Hauraki Plains', compiled by Elsie Alice McDonald (later Mrs Rae), focusses on the geology, landscape, and social history of the Western Hauraki Plains in the Waikato Region. McDonald's history has a preface and two parts: "Pt 1 The Maori" and "Pt 2 The Pakeha". In Part I subjects covered include pa sites and fortifications, burial sites and traditions, eeling, and conflict with other tribes, including Ngapuhi under Hongi Hika. Part II focusses on the development of the land for dairying and flax farming, the discovery of taonga during development, the building of houses, various personalities, and social events such as dances. Places specifically mentioned include: Kahurangi Pa, Torehape stream, Patetonga, and Mangawhero. Illustrations attributed to Kenneth William Rae (later McDonald's husband). Includes pasted in photographs. See Illustrations field for further information. Includes two commendations on the title page, one being from Duncan McFadyen Rae (principal of Auckland Training College and no relation) and the other from a person with the initials "F C L". Notes and remarks in pencil throughout the volume are in an unknown hand. Description: This map covers the area from Maungatautari Mountain and the upper reaches of River Waikato to the mouth of the River Waihou entering the Firth of Thames, and including Tauranga Harbour. Settlements, pa, mountain ranges, rivers, streams and lakes are marked, as are numerous sites of fights accompanied by a record of numbers killed. The Te Aroha block is prominently shaded as are adjacent areas which appear to be jointly claimed by Ngatihaua and Ngaiterangi. Boundaries of other Maori land are marked by dotted lines, some of which are named as follows:- Ngatiraukawa lands, Ngatihaua lands, Ngaiterangi lands, Hauraki lands, Waikato lands. Limits of the scale of this map have been marked with red pencil to allow for changes in size during photocopying. The orientation of this map faces south. Description: Engraving from the official account of Cook's first voyage, based on a drawing of Te Puta o te Paretauhinau Pa at Mercury Bay, Coromandel Peninsula (not Tolaga Bay as claimed in the title). The drawing of the pa is by Herman Diedrich Sporing, Sir Joseph Banks' clerk; the canoe is copied from a drawing by Sydney Parkinson, the official artist aboard the Endeavour. The scene shows a boat from the Endeavour being rowed in the left foreground; a small canoe with five Maori engaged in fishing in the right foreground; an arched rock in the water behind the boats with a pa on top of it; two canoes pulled up on the bank to the right behind the arched rock and dense bush in the background. Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks. Description: This map covers the area from the un-named Maungatautari Mountain and the upper reaches of the River Waikato to the River Waiho [sic] entering the Firth of Thames. Tauranga Harbour is included but Rangiwhara Island at the entrance is not drawn. Settlements, pa, mountain ranges, rivers, streams and lakes are marked, as are numerous sites of fights accompanied by numbers killed.
