Description: Shows "Gulf of Shouraka" (Hauraki Gulf), Coromandel, Waiheke district, soundings, and some Maori and English placenames (sometimes mis-spelt). Shows Manukau and Waitemata harbours. River Thames refers to the Firth of Thames. Compiled largely from the work of Dumont D'Urville and crew of Astrolabe, 1827, during his exploration of New Zealand, and possibly others. Possibly taken from British Admiralty Chart of the same area published in 1836 - (from Brian Hooker). Drawn by Mudie for the Clint's Establishment, Sydney, ca. 1838 (see AT 13/13 8.7.91 (Hooker)). Description: Topographic map of the southern half of the North Island, with especial emphasis on the Wairarapa valley, showing natural features and stands of timber; the Maori names for some of these features are given, together with names and locations of some pa . Includes the surveyors' route which began on 1st. June, ca. 1848, from a site along the Manawatu River to the Ruamahanga River, Lake Wairarapa, ending at the Hutt River on 20 June. Description: Topographic and surveying map of northern part of Kapiti Island from the Otehou Stream northwards. Topographic features are described and some vegetation is named. Water supplies, walking tracks, sites of McLean's house, a woolshed and sheepyards and a fisherman's hut are marked. Streams and localities have Maori names. A note refers to an abundance of goats on the island. Stamps on bottom right corner: 14958. Indexed Stamp on bottom right is of the District Land and Survey Office, Wellington. Description: A base map of the Rotorua district has numerous added notes, handwritten in the margins and over the top half of the map itself. These cover a variety of topics and include names of individuals, Maori chiefs, where they lived with some events and occupations. Multiple Maori place names are included with descriptive notes in English. Some dates are recorded with details of battles and numbers killed. Topographical features are marked, such as land cave, waterfall, hot spring and unrelated references such as a note about a half-full kete of tawa berries. Names include: Pirimi Mataiawea, Gilbert Mair, N'whakane, Paddy Murphy - deserter from Imperial Regt., Te Waharoa, T.H. Smith - Maketu, Tamati te Aorangi - Maori war veteran.
