Description: Unidentified men with tobacco pipes, washing dishes and peeling potatoes, outside the Fahy whare at Maranui (now known as Lyall Bay), circa 1910. Photograph taken by Sydney Charles Smith. "This is likely to have been a house for weekend bachelor holidays where sporting activities (note the gun) would usually take precedence over domestic chores. A net covered food safe is attached to the wall on the left. The versatile kerosene tin plays one of its many roles in early New Zealand households." A pencil portrait of a man with a hat and large moustache is inset The man with the hat seems likely to be Joseph James Moore, a carrier / carter, who lived between Sutherland Road and Queen's Drive, Lyall Bay from 1905 to ca 1921. He owned a stables with 12-15 hourse and also had tearooms on Lyall Parade. The cart in the view may also be his. Photographs of the period owned by descendants show him with a large moustache.
