"This is likely to have been a house for weekend bachelor holidays where sporting activities (note the gun) would usually take precedence over domestic chores. A net covered food safe is attached to the wall on the left. The versatile kerosene tin plays one of its many roles in early New Zealand households." He owned a stables with 12-15 hourse and also had tearooms on Lyall Parade. The cart in the view may also be his. Photographs of the period owned by descendants show him with a large moustache.
