Description: Photograph albums entitled 'Views of New Zealand', containing Burton Bros photographs of New Zealand scenes, as well as views in Tonga and Samoa. These island views include one of Princess Anaziene (grand-daughter of King Tupou I of Tonga) outside the palace at Nukualofa; another taken near Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu; one of Neiafu (Vava'u, Tonga); and one in Apia, Samoa. Places in in the North Island of New Zealand include the Pink and White Terraces before the Tarawera Eruption of 1886; Mangarewa Gorge (named as Mongarewa Gorge in the album); Rotokanapanapa, Lake Rotomahana; and Waiwera with the Waiwera Hotel centre left. The South Island images show Lake Moke; Wet Jacket Arm; Passage Point Cove in Dusky Sound; and Cabbage Tree Grove (Halfway Bay, Lake Wakatipu) in which a log hut with thatched roof is seen behind a large flax bush, surrounded by cabbage trees. Description: A man standing outside a log cabin in the bush. Described on the reverse as Smith's Creek, Tauherenikau River. Photographer unidentified. A group of Maori men, women and children outside a meeting house at Galatea on the Whanganui River next to the tekoteko aro. The photograph was taken by a member of a canoe trip travelling from Taumarunui to Wanganui captained by Bob Grey (not pictured). Photographer unidentified. Description: Photographs of the Field and Hodgkins families, taken by William Hughes Field; and of New Zealand scenes. A number of views are of Dunedin taken between 1850 and 1868. Professional photographers include W J P Hodgkins, the Burton Brothers, F Finch and F A Coxhead. Individual views show scenes including a match played between the English cricket team vs Wellington, at the Basin Reserve, March 23-24, 1888; fire that destroyed the offices of Buckley & Co, a legal firm in Wellington, circa 1890s; views of a yachting party in Pelorus Sound; a house built of punga logs, circa 1858; various houses belonging to the Field and Hodgkins families, including Cranmore Lodge (Dunedin), and the Field house in Everton Terrace (Wellington). Also includes photographs of the Hodgkins' rented house in Ravensbourne. Inside the back cover is a black and white photographic copy of an illuminated address to Bishop Selwyn in farewell on his departure from New Zealand, with vignettes painted by Charles Decimus Barraud. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, both North and South Islands, taken by Daniel Mundy between 1860 and 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p. 51). The views include a number in the Thames goldfields, with scenes of gold batteries, miners' huts, and a tramway. Mundy includes two rivers which are now differently named, the Tekihe River [i.e. Taheke River], and Tiremakau River [i.e. Taramakau River]. Quantity: 1 album(s).
