Description: "Wa" 165; a Wa class steam locomotive working on the Gisborne section of New Zealand Railways lines. Original photograph in the New Zealand Railways collection; this image is a glass copy negative made from an original print by Albert Percy Godber. This image is reproduced in "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer and W W Stewart (1965, p 59), with the inscription "`Wa' 165, working on the Gisborne Section. New Zealand Railways". "Wa" 165; a Wa class steam locomotive (2-6-2T type), was built by New Zealand Railways, Hillside Workshops (maker's no. 19/97), went into service in March 1898, transferred to the Gisborne section after 1910, was written off in May 1961, and preserved. Description: Photographs, chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, including family portraits, areas where he lived, Petone and the Petone Fire Brigade, railways, the Hutt Valley, Wellington, and areas in the upper North Island. The family photographs show his immediate family (his wife Laura (nee Zinckgraf), and children William Albert and Phyllis Mary); groups including his father and mother Charles and Mary Ann Godber, his brother Harry Leonard and wife Annie and their daughter Constance Alice, and Laura's brother Charles Albert Zinckgraf. Godber was a fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade, and there are photographs of groups of firemen and fire fighting equipment, and displays of methods of fire fighting. Associated with Godber's work with New Zealand Railways, and particularly at the Petone Railway Workshops, there are views of various workshop buildings, groups of railway workers; one of M J Mack (General Secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants of New Zealand); images of damage to rolling stock after railway accidents; trains; the Raurimu Spiral; railway viaducts; logging railways; and railway stations. Photographs taken in the northern part of the North Island include coal mines, rock formations, hot springs at Te Aroha and Kamo; Whangarei and the Wairua Falls; suburbs of Auckland including Newmarket, Remuera, Parnell, Onehunga, and Ellerslie Race Course. A print from this negative is at Pa1-q-101 (Godber Album vol 108, p 75), with the caption "First rail motor train. 1906" Inscriptions: Album page - bottom centre - Lower Hutt. D 197. First rail motor train. 1906. NZR \"D\" class 197 was built by Neilson & Co., Glasgow (maker's no 1844/74), went into service on 5 April 1879 and was written off in 1916. Description: "H" 204, an H class steam locomotive, type 0-4-2T, built by Neilson. Standing on the step of the engine is R (Bob) Clark; and in the cab is R (Bob) Hope. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber. An original print from this negative is at PA1-q-101 (Godber album vol 108, page 22). The album includes a blueprint of the specifications for this locomotive. A Fell engine, built by Neilson & Co., Glasgow (maker's no 3468/86), which entered service on the 9th of August 1886 and was written of in March 1956. It was equipped with Joy's radial valve gear on the \"outside\" engine. (Information from the 'Register of New Zealand Steam Locomotives 1863-1971' by W G Lloyd, 1974, page 53, and 'Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives' by A N Palmer & W W Stewart). An original print of this image is in Godber Album Vol 108, p 22 (PA1-q-101), where the two men are identified. Inscription on the right of the image reads: H 204 as originally. R Clark. R Hope.
