Description: Photographs taken between 1888 and circa 1929, chiefly by James Caleb Cornwall of his family, life, and work. Identified photographers of studio portraits include George Gregory (Auckland), Berry and Company (Wellington), Illingworth Toska Studio (Wanganui), Canadian Studio (Auckland), and Bunting Studio (Palmerston North). Many photographs in the album are captioned underneath the image or on the rear of the print. - Contains images relating to Cornwall's work as a creamery manager and farmer. Photographs feature creamery buildings and machinery, the transportation of milk products by horse and cart, and creamery workers. A number of buildings have the text 'NZ Farmers Dairy Union' painted on them. Farming images feature ploughing, clearance of land, and livestock portraits of cattle and horse prepared for showing. cows, and horses. Various dogs, a pig, and chickens are also seen. - Album features images of areas where Cornwall lived and worked. Locations covered are mainly in the Manawatu-Whanganui Region and include Linton, Shannon, Mangaramarama, Pahiatua, Longburn, Konini, Oringi, Upper Hutt, and Woodville. Specific locations are the farm of R D Knight at Mangaramarama (near Pahiatua), including scenes from Knight's annual horse sale, the Gaseford [Gaisford?] family property at Oringi, the Longburn Freezing Works, Pahiatua train station. Also included are photographs of houses (one hand coloured), cottages, farm buildings, and a bush camp. - James Cornwall appears in many images and his his friends, family, and associates (including employers) are included. Archie Curry, Florence Swan, Jack Capel, Rob Roy, Leo Harding, R D Knight, Ethel Bailey, Phoebe Bailey, Lucy Bailey, Phoebe Swan, Sydney 'Sid' James Short, Fred Bliss, and Jimmy Muir are identified. Prime Minister Richard Seddon is also seen in one image. Album also contains a group portrait of suppliers to the Upper Hutt creamery and another of the Woodville Fire Brigade. Unidentified people include an ex-girlfriend of Cornwall's (a teacher), men at a bush camp, men driving milk carts, and an unidentified family group. - Futher images include the transportation of wood by horse and cart, flooding at Konini, and some images relating to trains (bridges, locomotives, and carriages). Arrangement: Plastic sleeves removed from original orange plastic clear file photograph album (31.5 x 25 cm) due to conservation concern with tight binding warping prints.
