Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenery taken by various photographs of whom Wheeler & Son and the Burton Brothers are identified. There are a number of images of Mount Tarawera and surrounds both before and after the eruption on 10th June 1886. A few other images show the volcanic areas around Whakarewarewa and Wairakei in the North Island; all the rest are in the South Island. Two interesting images show people transported across wide rivers by flying fox, one with a woman sitting in the `cage', across a river near Lake Wakatipu (probably Deep Creek or the Shotover, near Skippers), and one with two people crossing the Hooker River. Most of the views of people are distant views, but several near the end of the album show close-up views of men climbing on glaciers with ropes and ice picks. Description: Views of New Zealand collected by Invercargill firm Erskine & Whitmore. Scenes taken by various photographers including Hart, Campbell & Co., and Coxhead & Le Sueur. Several views show Queenstown under floods in 1878; others of the Queenstown-Lakes Region, Waitati, Gore and Dunedin in the South Island. In the North Island, one shows a large picnic party travelling in three horse-drawn coaches, stopped at Ngauranga; many show a range of steam locomotives including J Class, K Class, F43, E22, H Class and A Class, in the Upper Hutt area, the Wairarapa, and on the Rimutaka line. Several at the end of the album show the effects of a major slip which blocked the mouth of the Summit Tunnel at the top of the Rimutaka Incline. Identified people are: Senior Sergeant George Christopher Donnelly of Hokitika police; Ivy Harper and Bert Birchfield; Mike Armstrong and Jim Daken; Mary and Heather Cornwell; Charleston coal mine operator Neil Mouat; Mack Heinz; Tex Smith; Mike Armstrong; Henry Heveldt and M Bennett of Nolan's Mill; Garth Graham; meat shooters Mike Bennett and Kevin Blythell; John 'Opo' Angus, the Eggling brothers; helicopter pilot Ben Morris and Les's wife Mary Cleveland; and Johnny Hewer, Claire Easterbrook and Liam Easterbrook in front of the Neils Beach school house. Featured natural environments include the hot springs at Welcome Flat and the Karangarua Valley, River, Ranges, and the view from the Sefton bivouac, Ocean Beach, and Neils Beach, including car wrecks at the rubbish dump. Description: Album of photographs, most of which were probably taken by George William Barltrop, between about 1899 and 1903. They include scenes in the South Island in the Otago area, around Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown, the Arrow River, Shotover River, Lake Hayes and the Remarkables. One sequence shows the barque `Gladys' at Queen's Wharf (?), Wellington, probably in February 1903, with major damage to masts and sails, and a group portrait of sailors, presumably from the `Gladys'. One group portrait shows Frederick Augustus Bennett (later Bishop), with another Maori clergyman, and two European clergymen; a second image shows three different Maori clergymen. Several photographs show scenes of public interest, including a peace demonstration, celebrations for the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902; a group of soldiers marching along Vivian Street, before leaving for the South African War in 1899; and two views of a major landslide in the manawatu Gorge in which a large group of men and women (passengers from a train), had to leave the train and walk across the slip, while workmen helped carry their belongings.
