Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Ink and pencil annotations on partly hand coloured map (incomplete - only part blue colour and some red for proposed roads). The pencil annotations add crosses (population) and accidental orange brush stroke indicate draft copy. Map is hand coloured to a key that reads: 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. Description: Map is hand coloured and probably the manuscript to the later published editions. The key to the map (from later editions is) 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' However, this not written on this edition. The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. Description: Contains a volume of photocopied newspaper clippings relating to the 1980 Maori land dispute over the Raglan golf course. Land taken during the Second World War for a military airfield at Raglan was returned to Tainui Awhiro people, but only after a long dispute. Description: This map covers the area from Maungatautari Mountain and the upper reaches of River Waikato to the mouth of the River Waihou entering the Firth of Thames, and including Tauranga Harbour. Settlements, pa, mountain ranges, rivers, streams and lakes are marked, as are numerous sites of fights accompanied by a record of numbers killed. The Te Aroha block is prominently shaded as are adjacent areas which appear to be jointly claimed by Ngatihaua and Ngaiterangi. Boundaries of other Maori land are marked by dotted lines, some of which are named as follows:- Ngatiraukawa lands, Ngatihaua lands, Ngaiterangi lands, Hauraki lands, Waikato lands. Limits of the scale of this map have been marked with red pencil to allow for changes in size during photocopying. The orientation of this map faces south. Maori letters - The Waitara question

Description: Includes copies of two letters in Maori about Waitara. The first letter is written by a young man from Waikanae who describes his observations about the Waitara dispute to his friends and relations at Waikanae. The second letter is from several chiefs from Waikanae who dispute the right of Te Teira to dispose of land at Waitara which they claim an ancestral right to through the Ngati Tuaho and Ngati Hinga hapu. Description: Much of the material comprises transcripts from the `Southern cross', `The New Zealander', and Hansard. The later years contain a higher proportion of reminiscences. References throughout to Forsaith's interests in Maori land purchases, journalism, music, politics, business and Presbyterian and Congregational churches. The text begins at volume 13 (p730) and ends with volume 32, the last volume about his time in New Zealand Source of title - Transcribed Relationship complexity - Whereabouts of volumes 1-12 is unknown. National Library of Australia was contacted in Oct 1994 but could provide no information on them. In all, they hold volumes 13-77. The volumes from 33 onwards were written in Australia and contain only an occasional mention of New Zealand Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s) positive (ca 800 pages).

Tauranga Harbour is included but Rangiwhara Island at the entrance is not drawn. Settlements, pa, mountain ranges, rivers, streams and lakes are marked, as are numerous sites of fights accompanied by numbers killed. The Te Aroha block is prominently shaded as are adjacent areas which appear to be jointly claimed by Ngatihaua and Ngaiterangi. Boundaries of other Maori land are marked by dotted lines, some of which are named as follows:- Ngatiraukawa lands, Ngatihaua lands, Ngaiterangi lands, Hauraki lands, Waikato lands. A typewritten sheet of explanatory notes is affixed to the map. These state that this map was used in the Maori Land Court held at Fort Britomart, Auckland, in January 1871.
