The Central Plateau with Mount Ruapehu, and other snowy peaks is shown.The vegetation in the left foreground includes toetoe. on the shore in the middle distance is a partly-built boat, probably the Victoria, a steamer launched July 1874 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - EAC / 1874 A similar view from the same spot, dated 1874 by C D Barraud is in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. It is possibly the original for Barraud's chromolithograph 'Lake Taupo' published in New Zealand Graphic and Descriptive (London, 1877), opp. p. 20.
