Description: Shows a view of Lake Taupo with houses to the left and right of the source of the Waikato River. The Central Plateau with Mount Ruapehu, and other snowy peaks is shown.The vegetation in the left foreground includes toetoe. on the shore in the middle distance is a partly-built boat, probably the Victoria, a steamer launched July 1874 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - EAC / 1874 A similar view from the same spot, dated 1874 by C D Barraud is in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. It is possibly the original for Barraud's chromolithograph 'Lake Taupo' published in New Zealand Graphic and Descriptive (London, 1877), opp. p. 20. Another similar watercolour by Charles Decimus Barraud, dated 1883, was on sale as lot 832 at Cordy's antique auction, 13 October 2009 Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
