Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenery taken by various photographs of whom Wheeler & Son and the Burton Brothers are identified. There are a number of images of Mount Tarawera and surrounds both before and after the eruption on 10th June 1886. A few other images show the volcanic areas around Whakarewarewa and Wairakei in the North Island; all the rest are in the South Island. Two interesting images show people transported across wide rivers by flying fox, one with a woman sitting in the `cage', across a river near Lake Wakatipu (probably Deep Creek or the Shotover, near Skippers), and one with two people crossing the Hooker River. Most of the views of people are distant views, but several near the end of the album show close-up views of men climbing on glaciers with ropes and ice picks. Algidus, February 1946. The next trips in the album were the Mt. Arthur tableland museum expedition, February 1946, and again in February 1948; the Bold Peak district, February 1943; trip around the Sounds on "The Alert", August 1948; air trip over the Sounds in April 1949; and then the South Pacific Science Congress, Auckland-Christchurch, February 1949. Description: Album of photographs collected by Rev G E Mason on a trip around the world in 1885-1886. Comprises photographs of California, Tasmania, Sydney, Ceylon, Egypt and New Zealand. In 1884 the Bishop of Lichfield recieved a request from the bishops of Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand, to send clergy to conduct missions in their dioceses. To this end he invited Rev G E Mason, and Rev Charles Bodington to do the job. The two clegymen left Liverpool for the United States on the 4th of July 1885, spent a summer in New Zealand, and returned to England in September 1886. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides includes views of Lake Coleridge, the Rakaia River, Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki showing the outflow river, views from the Hermitage (including Mts Sefton and Cook), terminal moraine in the Tasman Valley, and Ball Hut and the botanising ground with gentians and mountain daisies. Slides on this sheet are numbered 176-206 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. (No. 175 of Lake Coleridge, is not noted on this sheet, but is one of those removed for the lecture series). Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. [175], 178-179, 181-184, 189, 191-194, 197, 204) showing views of Lake Coleridge and country around, Rakaia River, the road to Mount Cook (Aoraki/Mount Cook), Lake Pukaki to Mount Cook, Mount Sefton, Hermitage Hotel, and the Tasman Valley from Ball Hut looking up the glaciers. These were taken as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. The lecture series are filed in later sequences.
