Description: Major-General James Melville Babington with two chiefs, photographed during the visit of Lord Ranfurly's party to the Far North, March 1904, by Malcolm Ross. The man on the right is Take Take Rangitupu of Ranana, Wanganui River. The man on the left is wearing a korowai (tag cloak). The photograph was probably taken at a kainga inland from Mangonui, where a hui to farewell Lord Ranfurly was held. Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - Men of War - past and present. General Babington and two maori warriors. The vice-regal party left Te Teko on the morning of 18 March 1904, reaching Auckland (by coach and train) the same evening. They then boarded HMCS Iris and cruised up the east coast. After landing at the Doubtless Bay cable station, they "proceeded inland from Mangionui to a village where a native meeting was held for the purpose of bidding farewell to Lord Ranfurly." Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken by various photographers, circa early 1880s. Images include several Maori groups, Maori kainga, meeting houses, carving; a large number of views of mud pools, geysers, hot springs, and in particular views of the Pink and White Terraces before the Tarawera eruption in 1886. Other views show areas of the South Island, including Dunedin City, Oamaru, Christchurch; and the North island including Auckland, Thames District (a number showing aspects of gold mining in the area). Description: Views around the Taupo Tongariro area, including Mounts Ngaruahoe and Tongariro, Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids, Lake Taupo and Wairakei. There is one image of the Maori interior of Tom Ryan's whare, one of the Terraces Hotel at Lake Taupo, and others of various buildings at the Spa Hotel (Taupo), including the interior of the dining room. This building was the meeting house Te Tiki o Tamamutu, purchased by John Joshua (proprietor of the Spa Hotel) for use as a smoking room and dining room for the hotel guests. Several images show unidentified Maori women in posed groups, or working with flax, and in one case a woman using a treadle sewing machine. An unidentified man is seen, in several images, fishing at pools below the Aratiatia Rapids. Photographs taken by Auckland Star photographers around the turn of the 19th-20th century. Description: Newspaper clippings, correspondence and research papers relating to oil exploration in Taranaki and an article Cowan wrote for Enzed Junior `Told on Waimate Pa: A Taranaki rock of history' published November 26, 1938. Handwritten letter to Cowan from Katherine Mercer dated December 8, 1938 in response to the article `Told on Waimate Pa'. Handwritten notes on `Maori Songs' which is titled `A Lament' and also refers to the song as a waiata aroha composed and sung by Mere Rore of the Ngati Rarua Tribe, of Wairau (Marlborough) for her mother Ramari Harepeka Porea Herewini. Includes lyrics in Maori and translation. Also written in pencil on back of memo paper from the United Service Hotel in Christchurch are notes relating to Maori vocabulary about paddling waka. Also a typewritten waka paddling chant. Copy of article written by Cowan in Brett's Christmas Annual December 1, 1924 `The magic of Te-Tahi-o-te-Rangi' a tohunga who was marooned on White Island. Newspaper clippings relating to Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotorua and North Cape, Te Reinga. Also includes a black & white silver gelatin print, mounted on cardboard of a Maori man and woman. The man is presumed to be Kipa Hemi Whiro, but the woman is unknown. The man is holding a pounamu mere and is dressed in a European suit with a korowai over the top. The unidentified woman is wearing a pounamu tiki and piupiu worn diagonally over the shoulder, over a black dress of the style in fashion in the 1890s. Was in an envelope labelled `Cook Strait' photos 1. Kipa Hemi Whiro (Pelorus) 2. `Endeavour' at The Brothers. This folder also contains an image of the ship HMS Endeavour.
