Description: Plan of Hone Heke's pa at Ohaeawai in the Far North District, Northland shows sites of the flagstaff, Kawiti's house, houses underground, heaps of potatoes and indian corn, pits underground covered with plants and earth, Nos. 1 & 2 - nine pounder guns, No. 3 - six pounder cannonade, c&d - points of attack, a&b - sections taken, are referred to in a key. Doors in the outer fence are marked and the principal place of egress and congress. Positions and distances of a camp and batteries around the pa are marked, also numbers of soldiers. Names include Major Bridge, Lt. Phillpotts, Major McPherson, Lt. Col. Hulme. A sketch on the left of the map is of the pallisade. Notes refer to the inner and outer pallisade with detailed information about the heights and thicknesses of the posts. The sketch on the right of the map is of a Maori wearing a cape, who appears to be using a blow pipe which projects through a section of the front face of the pallisade. Description: Shows the battle of Puketutu (or Mawai) at Lake Omapere, near Okaihou, between the Bay of Islands and Hokianga Harbour, with Royal Marines in the right foreground firing a Congreve rocket, ranks of soldiers, Maori in the distance, the pa surrounded by the smoke of gunfire in the background at the foot of wooded hills and the shore of the lake to the right. The man in the top hat standing alongside the rocket is thought to be Lieutenant Edgerton, R. N., with sailors from HMS North Star. The original for a wood engraving 'Attack on Okaihau from a sketch by Col. Bridge, 58th Regt' published in Thompson, A. S. The story of New Zealand (London, 1859) Vol. 2 p.110. Description: Military map of Bay of Islands, showing route taken by the British troops to reach Kawiti and his supporters. Route begins at Hokianga Harbour from the Waima River, along native path, through the Kaikohe pa site and mission station, along cart road through Waimate, past Kawiti's first pa site, along Cowa Cowa [Kawa Kawa] River, to the position of camp at Wai-o-meo 24 December 1845. Directly above is Kawiti's second pa north of the Waituto Hill. Other Titles - Sketchmap Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Description: Scenes from the Northland campaign of the New Zealand wars, 1845-46, other Northland views, portrait of Hone Heke. Includes two items by unidentified artists, and a lithograph of a map by John Nops. Inscriptions: Title on spine: Bridge & Williams - Maori war sketches. Cyprian Bridge and John Williams collaborated in documenting events of the war in the far north. Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s). Physical Description: 2 lithographs, 4 drawings, 5 watercolour paintings, in album 344 x 380 mm, 1/2 brown calf, brown buckram. Provenance: Collection of Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull with an inscription in his hand inside the original front cover (loose at top of box A-079). Appears to be his 'New Zealand album containing 16 original sketches, 1845-6', purchased from W. Brown of Edinburgh, 19 July 1893 for £8 (letters of A H Turnbull). Transfers: A watercolour by Cuthbert Clarke showing an 1849 feast in the Bay of Islands removed from this album and located at B-030-007. An ink and wash drawing by John Williams, 'Stern of a canoe' now located at A-079-015 shows as an offset print on a page of the original binding - Watercolour on p. 5 (dimensions 200 x 280 mm) removed and transferred to box A-079-006.
