Description: Photographs of a range of industries in New Zealand, possibly related to the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906-1907. Industries include animal related products including wool, from fellmongery to transportation and finally weaving; meat works, including the slaughter house, the mutton cooling room, shipping fozen mutton, the beef cooling room; butter, at the Hautapu Butter Factory, showing butter in the factory, and delivering butter at Ngaruawahia Railway Station; the Waikato Bacon Factory, and pig carcases. Other industries include flax, with scenes showing a flax mill, carting flax to the mill, stripping, washing and drying flax, and also grading hemp and loading bales of it at Auckland wharves; kauri timber industry, from felling the trees, hauling logs by bullock, floating logs over the Wairoa Falls, sorting timber at the mill booms, timber mill on the Wairoa River, and a million feet of sawn timber at the mill. The latter part of the album shows scenes of gold dredging on the Buller Gorge, hydraulic gold-mining at Ross, Westland; coal mining at Brunner; kauri gum diggers and a warehouse storing kauri gum; and finally views of the Sugar Refinery in Auckland, and a warehouse filled with sacks of sugar. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This sheet starts with a series of maps, a world political map, map of the sea floor showing the relationship of New Zealand with the various undersea mountain ridges etc., New Zealand physical, rainfall, and geological maps. Views of Cape Maria van Diemen and Rangitoto nearing New Zealand on board ship. Auckland Harbour from the air; Auckland from Devonport; Ninety-Mile Beach; country near Waipoua Forest, the road into the forest, and Tane Mahuta, on the way to Kaipara; Kaihu River and coastal country between Trounson's Forest and Waihue; and Omamari beach and stream. The last five views show aspects of Holmridge farm owned by Mr Williams' friends Ruth and Vernon Woods. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England. Description: Album of photographs taken by James Valentine & Sons, circa 1880s-1900s. Most of the images have a caption printed into the photograph, and many also have a hand-written caption beneath. At some point many of the photographs have been removed from their slots, and others have been placed in the wrong slot so that the subject and caption on the photograph does not match with the caption below. Places are listed above. There are five photographs of Maori, three of women, two of chiefs. The names given are difficult to identify, having complicated spelling, and the captions on photographs have faded in some cases. They include "Maori wahine Ngareti"; "Maori chief Hoera Watene"; "Maori chiefs Panapa Tenihotiti and Topopoki" and "Maori wahine Huihana?". Voyage to New Zealand on board RMS Strathmore, and the Wanganella

Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') voyage to New Zealand in 1958. He travelled on board the SS Strathmore, via the Suez Canal as far as Australia, after which he sailed to New Zealand leaving from Sydney on the Wanganella. This sheet of slides covers the trip from Colombo with views of Colombo streets, a stall selling cottons and silks, a Buddhist shrine, and priests at a Buddhist Temple. There are two views of the Cocos Keeling Islands before his arrival in Australia. Only one purchased slide of koala bears relates to Australia on this sheet, the rest having been transferred to another file by Mr Williams, for later use in lectures on Australia. Slides on this sheet are numbered 27-68 with gaps for those removed for lectures on Australia, and on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 27-45) showing arrival in and departure from Australia as part of a representative collection on Australia for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. Slides nos. 47, 59-50, 52, 54-56, 60, 64-67, and 69-70 were transferred for his lectures on New Zealand. The lecture series are filed in later sequences. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903.
