Description: View north across the harbour from Thorndon, just to the left of Pipitea Pa, with the palisades of the pa on the right, a ravine and three Maori to the left of the ravine. Kaiwharawhara with the hotel is visible on the extreme left, with the Western hills leading to the Tararuas, and the Hutt Valley in the distance. The view may possibly be further along Thorndon Beach from the Pa. There was a ravine where the motorway now runs, crossed by the Hobson Street Bridge in later years, and this may be the area shown, in central Thorndon. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: Three illustrations of scenes in the Wellington area. The top view looks north along the beach (now Thorndon Quay) towards Kaiwharawhara, with several houses along the beach, including the roof and front garden of Major Baker's. The central view, probably at Taita, shows the banks of the Hutt River, with Maori leaving Maraenuku Pā [Makahinuku Pa], overseen by soldiers. The palisades of the pa are to the right, with other buildings and canoes in the distance along the riverbank. The lowest view shows 'The red house' or the Barracks in Thorndon Quay, with soldiers marching up the slope towards them, another house and Tiakiwai Pa (described in Brees' text as 'Jackawai') in the middle distance. Description: A view from Ngaio or Khandallah looking down towards Kaiwharawharal, with the hotel, the pa and houses visible. Thorndon and Pipitea Point can be seen in the backgroundl, with houses and the gully running parallel to Tinakori Road (now part of the motorway) visible. The faint outline of the hills behind the town can be seen on theleft-hand sheet. Mantell's title suggests that the hill from which he took the drawing may have been called Kohekohe (from the predominant tree in the area, perhaps). Description: A view along a beach (now Thorndon Quay) looking towards Kaiwharawhara and Wadestown, with the road to to Wadestown shown winding up the hill in the background. There are houses at the beachfront on the left, mostly at the top of the low hill above the beach. Major Baker's house appears as a roof only, with a tree in front of it. A couple on horseback is in the foreground and a Maori man, woman and child stand at the left. The Library holds a photographic copy of the privately-owned watercolour original for this engraving, painted between 1842 and 1845 (negative 138581 1/2). Description: Shows part of the entrances to Port Nicholson and Evans Bay, Te Aro, Thorndon, and in the centre foreground, Kaiwharawhara with hotels and the Maori pa. The ship Oliver Laing is the larger vessel in harbour in the distance to the right. The houses on land protruding into the harbour in the near right are in Thorndon; the line of houses at the foot of a cliff by the sea beyond that is Lambton Quay, with 'Plimmer's ark' (the barque Inconstant) moored in the water at the end. The buildings beyond are on Te Aro Flat An ink inscription on the verso reads: A sketch of part of Wellington, N. Z. from the old track across Kai-warra-warra Hill. The straits {Cooks} are visible over the distant hills. Evans Bay is partially visible on the left, the entrance to the bay {Port Nicholson} is again to the left of the hills visible on the extreme left. The ship visible is the "Oliver Laing" from Liverpool. She is about 1299 tons register & thus will give some idea of the distance. The Kai-warra hotels are visible in the immediate foreground on the Hutt road.
