Description: View of a man (thought to be Reverend Joseph Matthews) standing near gravestones in the churchyard of the 1st Saviours Church in Kaitaia, Northland, with the wooden church building in the background, buttressed by props. Photograph taken between 1875 and 1888 by an unidentified photographer. Source of descriptive information - From back of file print: In a heavy gale in 1875 the timbers of the church cracked, giving rise to the fear that the church would collapse. As a consequence 2 props were placed on either side of the exterior walls. These seem to be visible in the photo. Man thought to be Rev. Joseph Matthews (1808-1895). (Information from "Matthews of Kaitaia" by S C & L J Matthews, Reed: 1940). Description: Drawn on a published map, shows plan of the ancient drains of the Kaitaia swamp, situated in Block V (five) Ahipara survey district, Pt 13, 14 and 15, adjoining the Pukepoto Block of Native land, on Kaitaia Road between Kaitaia and Ahipara. Archeological detail of old water course or drain, remains of Maori kainga encircling drain, remains of Maori camp, several large store pits, and streams (Waitapu, Kohi, Whau, Waipapa). Shows the position of the new drains, undrained land (raupo and wiwi swamp), unformed roads, school residence and Kaitaia Road. Blocks of land owned by A.W. Masters (Pt. 15), Campbell (Pt. 14) with Pt. 13 divided between L. Masters and S. Masters. Map made by the Department of Lands and Survey, surveyed for the Polynesian Society on August 18, 1921. Description: Shows Veili, a white-haired Maori chief, placing a coin in a collection basket on a table, while Rev William Puckey and Rev Joseph Matthews look on. Veili holds a small child by the hand, and chief Pana-kareao and his wife stand in the right foreground, while a large group of Maori talk together in the background.
