Interviews for Jessie Munro's biography of Suzanne Aubert

Date: 01 Aug 1992 - 05 Aug 2003 - 01 Aug 1992 - 05 Aug 2003

By: Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion; Munro, Jessie, active 1990-2008; Wrack, Bernadette Mary (Sister), active 1992

Reference: OHColl-1186

Description: Comprises interviews that formed part of the research for Jessie Munro's biography of Suzanne Aubert (later Mary Joseph Aubert) entitled 'The Story of Suzanne Aubert', published 1996. Interviewees who lived in Ranana or farther north in Hiruharama (Jerusalem) on the Wanganui River, the site of Suzanne Aubert's mission, recall relatives talking frequently about Aubert. They add Maori often referred to her as Meri. A few remember seeing Aubert herself but most recall the nuns, who remained after Aubert left. Topics discussed include Aubert's fluency in Maori, her competence in natural healing, doctoring by horseback, the mission's nursing and teaching work, particularly among Maori, the Maori Mass, and the farm's gardens and fruit trees. Sisters mentioned include Sr Bridget, Sr Claver, Sr Damian, Sr Isidore, Sr Mark, Sr Melchior, Sr Veronica. Fathers Soulas and Caulfield are also mentioned. Nuns who worked in Jerusalem recall the hard work required under Aubert's firm but motivational leadership. They describe her physical appearance and strong French accent, as well as her humour and rapport with local and visiting priests. Other interviewees talk about her inspirational social work in Wellington, first visiting the invalid poor around Te Aro before setting up a soup kitchen and day nursery in Buckle St. Aubert and her sisters were a familiar sight in the area. They also discuss Aubert's establishment, in 1900, of St Joseph's Home for Incurables, also in Buckle St, which provided care for the old, terminally ill and disabled. Interviewees discuss the opening in April 1907 of Our Lady's Home of Compassion at Island Bay, Wellington, where Aubert remained, apart from a visit to Rome, 1913 to 1919. Former medical registrars at the Home of Compassion recall the quality of the nursing and the ongoing care of severely disabled children. The institution also took convalescing children, foundlings and some school-age children from Jerusalem. Former residents, then children, recall Aubert as a small and elderly woman who could sometimes be strict. A number of interviewees mention Mother Aubert's large funeral at St Mary of the Angels in downtown Wellington in 1926. Interviewees are: Reverend John Aiken, Sophie Albert, Sarah Ashby, Harry Ashworth, Hazel Beazley, Patricia Charlton, Dr C.T. Collins and Sister Anne, Sister Dorothea Meade, Ivan Emia, Sister Eustace Congalen, Jessie Munrol, Dr Elsie Gibbons, Ron Hough, Sister Veronica O'Brien, Lacie Pauro, Pestall Pauro, Patrick Parsons, Sister Philippine, Solange Poulet, Bessie Poumoa, Billy Robinson, Reverend Rozier, Erina Scanlon, Ngati Tawhiril, Peter and Stacia Moutairil, James Walker, Thomas and Nohi Wanihi.
