Description: Two bound volumes of 'The 9.5 am' (No 1, Feb 1902 - Vol 2 No 11, Dec 1903). Each volume contains issues of the '9.5 am' magazine, edited by Johannes Andersen. Comprises typewritten text of the magazine, with photographs, original drawings, printed illustrations (and newspaper clippings) from other publications pasted in. The content includes articles, cartoons, jokes, poems, and excerpts. Source of title - Supplied by Library The 9.5 am publication derived its title from the practice of giving civil servants 5 minutes grace after 9am to sign the attendance book before a red line was ruled to identify late-comers. Source: Press, 13 May 1903. The magazine was edited by Johannes Andersen when he was employed as a clerk at the Lands and Survey Department, Christchurch office. Description: Cartoons by Laurence Clark (Klarc) about New Zealand and international political, social and agricultural issues. Many cartoons have a Whangarei/Northland focus. Early cartoons in the collection were submitted to the Farmindex website. From 2009, the cartoons appeared on Saturdays in the Northern Advocate, and some also appeared in the local Whangarei publication, 'Scene.' Part of the NZ Cartoon Archive Laurence Clark, born 1949 in Whangarei, is a New Zealand cartoonist and illustrator. Clark started his career in illustration in 1967 at the New Zealand Herald, and worked as the daily political cartoonist there from 1987 to 1996, and then published weekly in the Herald until 2000, when he began freelancing from his Whangarei studio. Clark publishes his cartoons under the name of 'Klarc'.

Description: Norman Kirk, leader of the Labour opposition, steps into Lake Manapouri as two National MPs Duncan MacIntyre and Daniel Riddiford look on from a row boat. One of them remarks, 'I don't mind him jumping into a lake - but just not this one!'. The raising of the water level of Lake Manapouri was a contentious election issue during the 1972 election. The Labour government of Norman Kirk was elected with a platform that included a strong endorsement of the Save Manapouri Campaign. Description: Cartoons by David Fletcher from 'The Politician' series, which satirises New Zealand and international political issues. The cartoons feature a set of standard characters who are used to represent various contemporary politicians in the news. The Politician - the MP for Upper Creek- is "inept, greedy and indecisive, and those are his good points". He is always portrayed as a bald fellow with a moustache, regardless of the gender or appearance of the real life political figure he is representing in the cartoon. Other recurring characters include his press secretary and political advisor, Miss Direct; Max, an "uncivil servant" and his right hand man, he is always portrayed as a bald fellow wearing glasses; Rose, the Politician's long suffering wife; and Jim, his hard-working parliamentary colleague and best friend. (For character sheet see DCDL-0025477). As at mid 2015 'The Politician' runs infrequently in the Dominion Post, and is published in Switzerland, Norway, Sweden and South Africa. Part of the NZ Cartoon Archive. Other Titles - The Politician David Fletcher was born in the UK in 1952 and later immigrated to New Zealand. Based in Auckland, he produces 'The Politician', a daily cartoon strip that appears in The Dominion Post and is syndicated around New Zealand, and to newspapers in Australia, Europe, Britain, South Africa, China, Malaysia, and Pakistan. Previously he worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for the New Zealand Herald before becoming a full-time freelance comic strip artist in 1983.

Part of the NZ Cartoon Archive Born in Christchurch in 1932, Bob Brockie became an editorial cartoonist for the National Business Review in 1975, specialising in political satire. The National Busines Review stopped publishing cartoons and other satire in 2018. He also holds a PhD in Biology, and has written a science column for the Dominion Post newspaper since 2001.
