Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Description: Photographs of Maori men, presumably members of the Kotahitanga Maori Parliament; there is a large photo of Meiha Keepa Te Rangihiwinui in the middle of the portraits. Many of the names on the collective photograph of (presumably) Kotahitanga members have been lost. There is also an illustration of a tree with no leaves, showing the tenets of the Church of the Seven Rules of Jehovah. Arrangement: Negatives at F 179644 1/2 to F 179676 1/2 Quantity: 33 b&w copy negative(s). Provenance: The originals from which these copies were made belonged to Mr George Te Whaiti (d 1964) of Greytown. George Te Whaiti was a man of standing in the South Wairarapa community both Maori and Pakeha. He was also associated with the affairs of Papawai Pa as his father had been before him. The portraits are probably members of the Maori Parliament which met at Papawai. The Church of the Seven Rules of Jehovah was a small sect supported by Maori mainly in the Wairarapa and Marlborough. When George Te Whaiti's house was demolished in the early 1970s the family stored items from the house, including the originals of these photographs, in another house at Pirinoa.

Description: Account of a meeting held at Thames on 11 and 12 Dec to discuss payment for the Ohinemuri goldfield. The meeting was attended by Sir Donald McLean, James MacKay, Edward Walter Puckey and chiefs and members of the Ngati Maru, Ngati Tamatera, Ngati Whanaunga and Ngati Paoa tribes. Physical Description: Holograph Provenance: No details about the provenance of the document are available other than that it was found under a pile of newspapers in a cupboard in a house at Te Anau in about 1975. How it came to be there could not be established at that time.

Description: Pencil sketch of a landscape with a large gathering of people, some standing, some seated, and others looking on from elevated ground, including horses. Pencil sketch on verso depicts full length figure study portraying female subject wearing a headscarf and long dress. Preliminary sketch for ATL C-054-018, which was later developed for a lithographic plate in Oliver's 'A series of lithographic drawings from sketches in New Zealand' (London: Dickinson, 1852). The letterpress accompanying the published lithograph states: "A Korero. Eloquence is as much valued by these people as by more educated races. Upon this occasion the Governor-in-chief (Sir George Grey) was addressed by Te Rangihaeta, who if not eloquent was highly energetic; his forte lay more in the field than the council, while Te Ranperaha was famous for his oratory.
