Description: Card / booklet of photographs shows a humorous illustration of a smiling landlady holding up a bill for board and lodgings. Inside the flap are 12 photographs of Maori, the Ohinemutu Church, Honga track, the post office, Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids. The handwritten message on the verso is to Mary, from Olive and Walter from Ruhi Street Rotorua. Message reads: "Dear Mary, Hope you are well as this leaves all up here at present. Winter is setting in alright isn't it. I've just finished a letter to Hilda. Maggie's baby is doing fine. Is it true Miss Ferguson is to be married. I wish her & Mr Woolley as well every happiness but you will miss her won't you. Everything is quiet as can be here. Walter awfully busy with the garden & I'm putting my nose in of course. Original owners of Shannon Station in the Gisborne Survey District were Frederick Augustine Martin, Joseph John Martin and Henry Augustine Martin of County Roscommon, Ireland who purchased 3471 acres in 1906. In 2007 the property was jointly owned by John Joseph Martin, grandson of Frederick Augustine Martin and other family members. Description: Includes cartoons about the expensive mayoral car, proposed plans for stadium at Basin Reserve, sewage dumping on Kapiti Coast, Michael Fowler tries for Arab money for the town hall, speeding truck-drivers in Ngauranga Gorge, tunnelling in Ngauranga Gorge for a sewer, money sought from the Education Dept for development of the zoo, the BNZ construction site, building of the Wellington Town Hall, invasion of porina moths, opinions of the architecture of the Beehive, the shabby state of the airport buildings, the liability of busdrivers to strike, street artists invited to paint murals, the high cost the the new town hall, hoteliers to be sponsored to skydive for charity. Arranged chronologically, according to the dates of "Dominion" clippings in Heath's albums (at E-521/547-q). Those for which no date could be found are arranged at around the estimated date. Description: Shows group of six men sitting around a rough wooden table lit by smoking candle in bottle. A waiter dishes food from a large pot at right. A saddle is placed on a rafter above the table, and tools or tramping gear rest against the wall at right. Dated ca 1890 because Mrs Birley is listed in Wises 1890-91 as being a hotel keeper at Glenorchy. Previously she had been listed as a hotel-keeper in Queenstown. By 1892 Wises lists J.K. Birley as the hotel-keeper at Mt Earnslaw hotel, Glenorchy; that may or may not be a grander establishment than the hut shown here. The exterior of the hut is assumed to be the one shown in A-169-031 "at foot of Earnslaw". Description: A head and shoulders frontal portrait in an oval surround, showing a middle-aged woman in a close-fitting floral bonnet. She wears a black dress with a short white collar, a brooch at her neck Martha Smith, née Nevy was the wife of the proprietor of the Travellers Rest Inn, Wairoa, Papakura Dating on the basis of the appearance of the bonnet, which was no longer in fashion by about 1865. The bonnet appears to have been painted in, rather than photographed on her. The Smiths ran the Travellers Rest Inn from 1853. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
