Description: Photograph album relating to Henry Beresford Maunsell's service during World War I, with the NZ Army 9th (Wellington East Coast) Mounted Rifles Regiment in Egypt. Many of the military personnel are identified, a few with later dates added noting when some of the men photographed in the album were killed in action. The first part of the album shows soldiers leaving on board HMNZ troopship 'Orari' 14 October 1914, the trip through Hobart, Colombo, Aden, Port Said until disembarkation in Alexandria December 1914. Many scenes show the shipboard stabling for horses used by Mounted Rifle troops; others show various ships they passed on the way. The latter part shows various military scenes in Egypt, including The New Zealand Corps camp near Cairo; swimming horses crossing the Nile; Red Cross Vauxhall ambulance; groups of soldiers riding camels; horse lines; and a line of horses at drinking troughs. Description: The two Nelson farms in this album are "Nga Mahanga" (Hugh Nelson's place), and "Taumata" (Jack Nelson's place). Views show the farm houses, and farm buildings, the farm land and landscape of the Pori area partially cleared of bush. One group of images shows the countryside under snow. There are a series of five images recording the building of a stables and buggy house, also a view of the woolshed and sheep at "Taumata". Scenic views of the area include the Makuri River ford, native forest interiors with pongas, and native forest. Four images show the interior of Hugh Nelson's whare which was the first building constructed at "Taumata". There are two photographs of local Maori standing beside tents in a bush clearing, one of army volunteers in uniform standing in front of tents, two of soldiers at an unidentified event, many of horses, some of hens, dogs, cats, and cattle. Two prints show one of the Nelson brothers cutting long grass with a scythe and 4 others are views of an unidentified house and its garden at Tiraumea (a distant view of this house surrounded by pinus radiata shelter belts and its surrounding countryside can be seen in album PA1-o-1206, page 7 captioned "Tiraumea"). There are also some images of "Newstead" the Monckton family home at Featherston. There is only one photograph of a Nelson family group. The rest are individual images of adults and children which include: Frederick Monckton, Lucy Miller (who married Frank Nelson), Winifred, [Lornie?], Dorothea, [Frances?], the brothers and the children. Description: View from across the Waikato River towards a steep hill with steps cut out of the riverside slope. The fence of a redoubt can be seen on top, with a gun to one side. A horse is being transported on a raft on the river, and another is carrying a load along the bank, led by a soldier. Probably copied from a watercolour by Hamley's superior officer, E. A. Williams, although the exact model is not known. A closer view by Williams, 'Whangamarino, 12 March 1864' is in the Turnbull at E-249-050. Description: View on the southern flank of Maungatautari with soldiers among the long grass, firing towards the pa on the top of the nearby ridge. Two horses are galloping by and there is swampy land or a stream in the foreground. Gunsmoke from hidden Maori can be seen coming from the pa and from the foot of the hill. This was the final battle of the Waikato campaign of the New Zealand wars While many of Hamley's watercolours are copied from those of his superior officer, E. A. Williams, this work may be his own The additional title 'Maori Pah on hill' is in the hand of Anthony Murray-Oliver, a former staff member.
