Description: Central third of full panorama from Thorndon to Te Aro. Main features named. Shows groups of figures on foreshore including man on horseback, man examining ships through spyglass, two small groups of Maori watching, two men smoking long pipes, 14 sailing ships including one rounding Point Halswell, Somes Island with flag flying at its southern end, two Maori craft including one with sails. View extends from Warepori's Village in Pitone at left, to Mount Victoria at right. Features named are: Warepori's village Pitone, Valley of the Hutt, Tararua Mountains, Somes's Island, Pt Halswell (the entrance from the sea), Pt Jerningham, Mr Duppa's house (Oriental Bay), Mount Victoria. There are colour transparencies available (photographed from better copies of this work, in volume of Wakefield's book). Description: Two photographs of the view across Wellington Harbour from near Pencarrow Head to Seatoun and Point Dorset; three photographs of the rocks and beaches around Point Dorset and The Pinnacles; people on the beach and in the sea at Lyall Bay; two men and a woman amongst the pine trees in Newtown Park; a woman in the Wellington Botanic Gardens with Glenmore Street behind her; three views looking down on the houses around Oriental Bay; next to the harbour on Oriental Bay showing the tram lines; the convalescent home on Mount Victoria above Oriental Bay; horses grazing with Evans Bay and the Miramar peninsula in the background; the SS Hawera and SS Haupiri in the patent slip at Evans Bay; the patent slip and the Union Steam Ship Company laundry at Evans Bay; a man and a woman on a path through the bush at Days Bay; looking over Roseneath towards Somes Island; and a yacht sailing at sunset near Pencarrow Head. Photographer unidentified. All the negatives have similar numbering and lettering on the reverse. Arrangement: Negatives at 1/2-003942 to 003961, 003963 to 003964, and 003981 to 003985. 1/2-003982 is missing and has been entered as a copy negative to a print at PAColl-7081-53. A number show the house `Fernhill' in Woolcombe Street (now part of The Terrace), Wellington, views from the house and its gardens. Portraits in clude Laurie Denton, Tom Tolley (locksmith), Alfred Bennett and his family, Mrs Denton Snr, Mrs Waters (had a grocery shop in Dixon Street), G L Adkin (as a boy), Miss Dixon (of the aerated water family, the Dixons of Dixon Street), George Butler (artist), and Beaglehole (David Ernest Beaglehole, father of Professor Ernest Beaglehole, and Professor John Cawte Beaglehole). Also includes photograph of a portrait painted by George Edmund Butler of his father Joseph Cawte Butler (maternal grandfather of John Cawte Beaglehole).
