Swainson, Lucelle Frances, 1842-1910 :Looking up the gorge to Napier side, about half w...

Date: 1875 - 1891

By: Beetham, Lucelle Frances, 1842-1910; Taine, Josephine Lorna, 1899-1996

Reference: A-178-009

Description: View of the Manawatu Gorge with a rider on horseback on the road beside the river in the distance and another figure walking behind the horse. The road is formed on the right side of the river but there is no railway line on the left. Native bush is shown beside the river and on the hillsides. The road through the Gorge was completed in 1875. The railway on the north bank did not go in until 1891. These facts suggest that this work was completed between 1875 and 1891. Also Richmond Beetham and his wife Lucelle (the artist) moved to Napier in 1876. The phrase "Mrs Beetham" appears to be in a different hand from the title. It may refer either to the identity of the artist or to an owner. The style is very like that of several members of the Swainson family. Lucelle Swainson married artist Richmond Beetham and seems a likely artist for this work. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - title and Mrs Beetham, the latter in a different hand Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pencil on paper 250 x 350 mm
