New Zealand scenery album 2

Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenery taken by various photographs of whom Wheeler & Son and the Burton Brothers are identified. There are a number of images of Mount Tarawera and surrounds both before and after the eruption on 10th June 1886. A few other images show the volcanic areas around Whakarewarewa and Wairakei in the North Island; all the rest are in the South Island. Two interesting images show people transported across wide rivers by flying fox, one with a woman sitting in the `cage', across a river near Lake Wakatipu (probably Deep Creek or the Shotover, near Skippers), and one with two people crossing the Hooker River. Most of the views of people are distant views, but several near the end of the album show close-up views of men climbing on glaciers with ropes and ice picks. Description: Photographs of and relating to the Wilson family ex Eketahuna. William M Wilson was born in Glasgow in 1868, coming to New Zealand when 8 years of age. He was apprenticed to John Fitchett, coach builder in Wellington, then with other firms including Rouse & Hurrell. He was employed by Wilfred Woolf in Eketahuna in 1894, and subsequently bought his business, and entered the firm of Kibblewhite and Wilson. Includes dwellings; carriages; group outings and portraits; 1 of the Club Hotel of F D Pelling; 3 of the Ryan family at Tawa Flat; 1 of a house at Island Bay, 1 of a thatched whare at Plimmerton, a Ghuznee St boarding house; 2 relating to the Burnett family; 2 scenes in Manakau; 1 of D A Greenlees store; 2 of Rarotanga; 2 relating to the business of Lyon & Blair, steam printers and lithographers; 1 of a group outside a house in Eastbourne; 3 relating to the Manson family; 1 of a military camp in New Zealand in preparation for the South African War. Of interest are a number of views of the ruins of a house, with only the chimneys standing; several of the new St John's Church, Hororata, including laying the foundations, building construction, and the completed church with lychgate; one of the tombstones of Sir John Hall, and his wife, with the new St John's Church partially visible in the background (for which Sir John Hall bequeathed the money); and one photograph of a steam tractor fording a river with difficulty, with a tow-rope leading to three laden wagons on the far side of the river. Description: Views mostly in and around New Plymouth but including clergymen gathered for Archdeacon Govett's jubilee in 1898, crowds in Pukekura Park for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubliee in 1897 and a Floral Fete in 1896, a homestead called Tokotahi near the Tiraumea River in Pahiatua County, the old mountain house on Mount Taranaki, and an area called Grant's Braes (now Waverley) in Dunedin. Description: Album of photographs taken between the 1860s and 1890s by various unidentified photographers, with one identified as being possibly by Daniel Louis Mundy, and one by James Bragge. Two early photographs, one of `Oakbourne Station', the home of John Davis Canning was taken circa 1860s, and one of `Orua Wharo' the home of John Johnston, and later his son Sydney Johnston, was taken circa 1870s, before the new house was built in 1879. Page 7 contains pressed ferns. Non-New Zealand photographs include several of Fiji, including Levuka, Taveuni, and an avenue of palms; one of the carving on Sir Joshua Reynold's bed at Tarrington; one of an Elizabethan glass cup; a carved overmantel; two views of Arundel House at Brighton, and one of Heston Church near Osterley Park. In the North Island, apart from the views of Oakbourne and Orua Wharo in the Hawke's Bay region, there are several views of the Pink and White Terraces, two showing the White Terraces both empty and full, Clay Island beneath the White Terraces; two views of the Manawatu Gorge and Seventy Mile Bush; and a view of Wellington City. South Island views include Milford Sound, Stewart Island, Braida Crags, the Wyndham River; a large group of people at celebrations surrounding the laying of the foundation stone for St John's Church in Invercargill; and two views of an exhibition of a Japanese village displaying such things as banners, lanterns and furniture, held in a hall in Invercargill. Description: Panoramic view across a field to a collection of farm buildings. There is a road on the far left and a driveway from it leading to a garage. A car is parked outside the garage (Number-plate: NZ-82-921) beside which three people are standing; a man wearing overalls and a woman with a small girl. Behind them are several small buildings and a larger barn. In the centre of the image are several wheeled farm implements and a man (just visible) in the middle of a pile of hay on a laden cart drawn by four Clydesdale horses, dogs alongside. Two men are by a large haystack on the right, one on the far side high up with a pitchfork, the other on the near side standing at the foot of a ladder. A few sheep in one of several sheep pens centre right; single-storeyed building behind the pens. Flock of sheep in paddocks in the middle distance, farmland all around. Taken by Robert Percy Moore.
