Description: The index map, Sheet N, of the scheme for the Lower Manawatu area begins at the mouth of the Manawatu River, reaching as far as Ashhurst and the Kiwitea Stream. The scheme for the Oroua River is also included from the junction near Rangiotu to the vicinity of Kiwitea Stream. Notes about stopbanks, boundaries, railways and classes of valuation are referred to in a key. An extensive valuation table, entitled Rate Yield of Zone Districts includes information about twelve disticts, their areas and capital value of classes. The eight sheets, numbered 1a to 8a, are enlargements of Sheet N showing rural properties adjacent to the rivers, which are divided into classes according to their valuation and referred to in a key. Each property is numbered and includes the owner's name and acreage. Notes on each sheet state that the maps were compiled from Valuation Rolls 3/12 to 3/24 and 1399, 1402, 1425, 1428, 1432, 1441-2, 1476, 1478. Includes named streets, State Highways 1, 12, 30 and 97 as well as the Main Trunk Railway Line and deviation near Longburn. Three amended maps on Sheet 9a are of parts of Sheets 1a. 2a. 5a. Manawatu Catchment Board Plan no. 1/80 has been crossed out on all maps and 514 inserted before copying Originals signed by P.G. Evans, Chief Engineer, 7/12/51, 16/12/52, 12/12/54. Sheet 9a is dated 12/12/54. It was drawn and traced by L.W. Pirie and checked by P.G. Evans. Scale on Sheet N is [1:63 360] and on Sheets 1a to 9a [1:15 840]. Quantity: 5 map(s) on ten sheets. Description: Album (1), 1916-1921. Tararuas and Mangahao Hydroelectric power construction (images 1-58). See also Album (2), 1921-1922, Mangahao Hydroelectric Power Scheme (images 59-122), at PA1-q-001. Black and white photographs of various areas in the Tararua Range, including views of the high peaks, the Mangaore Stream, the Horowhenua lowland area from the ridge leading up to Te Paki trig station, the Arapeti Valley from the site of the future Tokomaru Dam (part of the Mangahao Hydroelectric scheme), and the remnants of the Shannon Land & Sawmilling Company sawmill in the Arapeti Valley. Views of a waterfall on the Tokomaru River which was submerged when the dam was completed; views of the jig tramway which connected the terminus of the service road with the bottom of the Mangahao Valley (450 ft descent, approximately 1 in 2 grade); sinking a shaft to test rock formation preparatory to construction of the power scheme.

Description: Sheet one is a planning map of the Otaki area from the sea to the Main Trunk Line and State Highway One. Includes numerous notes of improvements to be made to the environs of the Otaki River and nearby streams. New and old shingle banks at the river mouth are marked. The Old Coach Road from Otaki to Foxton is named. Sheet two is a planning map of the Otaki River from the railway bridge towards the Tararua Range, between Hautere and Rahui Roads. Includes numerous notes of improvements and the site of the present and proposed river channels. A small cross sectional drawing indicates the width of the ultimate improved channel and the maximum flood line. Work already completed and proposed work are referred to in a key on both maps. Description: Album related to farming operations, stock and general development at Sonoma (North Block), sections 3E No. 4 & No 2, Blocks VI & VII, Waiopehu S.D., Horowhenua; and Woodside, section 42, Block 11, Waiopehu S.D., Queen Street East, Levin. Photographs dated between 1906 and 1936. Both sections owned by members ot the Adkin family. Scenes in 1914 showing the site of a sawmill owned by P Bartholomew, which was removed when the timber had been cleared. Shows the land from first bush clearance, felling of bush and burn-off, to arable fields and crops, including growing of swedes and potatoes. Also shows construction of a traffic bridge over the Makahika River.

This base map has been used to indicate the flood of January 1953, ponded areas, overflows and ponded volumes, also referred to in a key.
