Description: Two memoranda books include details of expenses for building a cottage, a bakers oven in 1862, rents received (1865-1866), accounts for family's shoes (1867), journey to Hokitika 19-30 October 1865 and recipes There is also a miners right issued to George Innes, Tuapeka (September 1861) and a manuscript of business notes (1860-1866) which includes costing of material in construction of brick house, Cashel Street (1863) and record of work done There is also a copy of Wellington Girls College Reporter, Jubilee number (May 1933) George Innes was a builder who lived at various times in Hokitika, Otago and Christchurch. Description: Scrap book of miscellaneous photographs, many of which have no captions and have not been identified. At the front of the album is an undated newspaper cutting showing the original building used for the Colonial Museum in 1865, which `has been revealed by the pulling down of the Dominion Museum, at the back of Parliament House. For many years this building has been used for a variety of purposes, museum exhibits being housed in adjacent quarters, but it is about to be demolished'. The first group show interior scenes of the Canterbury Museum, with exhibits of bird skeletons, and mounted birds. Other scenes show mounted animals, possibly not in Canterbury. Scenery includes views of the Franz Josef Glacier; and a number which are identified showing the gold-mining area around Ross and Donoghues, the Totara River and Mikonui River. One page has six photographs of mountainous regions in Switzerland; several show the area near the Wellington caves in Queensland, Australia; and two views show the breaking of the Cook Strait Cable. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. Description: Collection consists of the papers of William Edward Hay; his wife, Mary Hay; his mother, also Mary Hay and his second son, Charles William Hay. Source of title - Supplied title William Edward and his wife, Mary Hay (nee Tindall) emigrated to Christchurch on the `Mermaid' in 1864. After eighteen months without steady work they moved to Hokitika where William tried his luck at the gold-diggings before taking up a permanent position with the `West Coast Times'. Late in 1871, the family moved to Melbourne but less than a year later they were back in New Zealand living in Dunedin, where William set up in business as a cabinet maker. In 1877, William's mother, Mary and eldest son, Benjamin, a dentist, came out to New Zealand. Shortly afterwards, William shifted to Auckland where he worked on the staff of the `Evening Post'. The latter part of the album consists of photographs of the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Islands, Whangarei and Kawau, taken on a Christmas cruise, 1913-1914. Description: Photograph album of New Zealand scenes The first sequence contains views of the road from Christchurch to the West Coast, taken by Daniel Mundy in February 1868. Another group are of further scenes in the South Island taken by the Burton Brothers around the Dunedin area. There are several views of Scotland and England, including one of the Brendon Hill Incline, an iron-mining area in Exmoor, and a view of the Larkworthy family castle in Aberdeenshire (name of the castle not clear in album). Later views in the album are taken by unidentified photographers, and include scenes of the Franz Josef Glacier, with the Waiho River; sluicing for gold at Black Gully; a tubular flume at Donnellys Creek; the Totara Ferry; viaduct at Jones' Creek; bush at Donoghues; and views of Ross and Hokitika.
