Description: Shows a map of the Hokianga County with a path of circles leading over it. The object of the game is to use dice and counters to travel through Hokianga County, informing players of points of interest and history; the last and therefore the most informed player to complete the journey wins. The accompanying bag with die and counters is at Eph-001. Creators were Susan Clarkson, Bruce Morley and Jenny Brown. The counters were polished gemstones made by Agnes Leaf of Rawene, and the die is a cube of rimu cut by Paul Burgess of Kohukohu. The game won a tourism design award in 1984, for a meritorious design of a souvenir. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Description: Photographs taken in the Bay of Islands and Hokianga districts in the late 1890s, by Frank J Denton. Include several of Paihia; the church with ruins of Archdeacon Williams' house; church belfry (standing alone in a field in front of the church); monument to Archdeacon Williams, Paihia Cemetery, `raised solely by Maori subscription'; and monument to the Treaty of Waitangi. Views of Kerikeri include the oldest wooden house, and the oldest stone house in New Zealand; and Kerikeri Falls (Rainbow Falls). At Waimate views show ruins of the first mill in New Zealand, remains of a factory near the old mill; puriri trees; and Waimate Church. Description: Photograph album containing outdoor views taken circa 1900-1905 by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in the Northland Region of New Zealand. Photographers unidentified but many possibly taken by Thomas Pringle who was employed by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in 1901. Compiler of album unidentified. Some images have captions. Images mainly show outdoor views, including landscapes, buildings, beaches, industry (including logging and gum digging), and harbours. Some show people. Whangarei and Whangaroa Harbour feature. Despite the title of the album: 'Maori life and scenery', Maori people do not predominantly feature, except in a loose print taken by Thomas Pringle in circa 1905, showing three girls playing 'whai' string game, and some other prints showing Maori families and individuals. Other: All prints have an inscription "New Zealand Government and Tourist Department Protected 7.1.03", however 7 January is not the date the photographs were taken. It is likely to be the date the was registered/patented. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Inscriptions: Backing board recto - On spine: "ZZ/P575/Photographs of Maori Life and Scenery" and "General Assembly New Zealand library" insignia. This insignia is also on the front of the album.
