Maori artifacts collected by Anders Hansen's family when he was lighthouse keeper at Little Papanui Inlet from 1916 to 1919. In 2005 the Maori artifacts were sold to the Otago Museum where they now form the Anders/Tiller Collection. He was following the route taken by Henry H Travers, with particular interest in wildlife, including various types of penguins, and wandering albatross. No captions were made originally. Description: Album of photographs of plant and animal life on Stewart Island, Snares Islands, Auckland Islands and Campbell Island taken on the scientific expedition to the Sub-Antarctic Islands undertaken in November 1907. Also includes are photographs of the Government steamship Hinemoa, on which the expedition travelled, and of of the remains of the ships Grafton and Dundonald, which were wrecked in the Auckland Islands. The photographer for the expedition was Samuel Page. A long two page inscription is inserted in the front of the album. Two copies, one hand-written with inscription and 25 signatures, followed by a copper-plate copy of the inscription and list of names. The inscription begins "To Captain J. Bollons, G.S.S. Hinemoa. We the members of the Scientific Expedition organised by the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury which has just visited the Auckland and Campbell Islands under your charge desire to thank you most sincerely & gratefully for the many facilities which you have put in our way for carrying on our investigations ..." One photograph shows the members of the Auckland Islands party of the expedition (names listed above). Another shows the surviving members of the crew of the Dundonald which was wrecked on Disappointment Island, and one showing three of the survivors on the deck of the Hinemoa with Hinemoa crew member K. Knudson, standing by the frame of a canvas boat which they used to try and escape from the island. (Photograph with caption listing their names, p 9) In 1907 the New Zealand Government agreed, after representations from the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury, the Otago Institute and the New Zealand Institute, to land scientific parties on the Auckland Islands and Campbell Island, during the annual trip of the Government steamship Hinemoa, under the command of Captain Bollons, in November. The purpose of the expedition was to extend the magnetic survey of New Zealand, and to further investigate the geology, zoology and botany of these islands. Description: Most of the photographs in this album date from 1945 and 1946. There are young men, some of whom are in military uniform, all of them friends and aquaitances of Miria Wills Johnson. One page of photographs depicts her Australian pen friends, another, people who attended a Y.P.C. Carnival Ball. Three photographs show a group of young men playing baseball, and there are two pages of snaps of motorbike races in progress. Family members, pets, picnics and excursions are represented. The largest section of photographs relate to the barque "Pamir" which was visited and photographed by Miria Wills Johnson when it was in Lyttelton in November/December 1946. Many of the photographs were taken for her. She climbed the bowsprit, the masts and the yard arms and took views of Lyttelton Harbour and of other ships in port at the time. Many of the sailors have been photographed and named. One, Colin Jessup, she seemed to know, and he was probably a Chatham Island connection. There are also photographs and a press cutting of the newly delivered inter island ferry, "Hinemoa". Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Album of photographs taken in the Otago and Wellington Regions, by an unidentified photographer. The South Island images include Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, Arrowtown, Paradise, Diamond Lake, Balclutha, the Clutha and Catlins Rivers, and scenes in Dunedin including the Botanical Gardens. A large number show the Shotover River and details relating to gold mining, including a miner's stone whare on the bank of the river and two views showing the waters of the Shotover escaping from a tunnel driven for mining purposes to allow the river to be diverted from its natural course. The North Island views are all in the Wellington region, particularly views of the harbour with its various shipping activities, with many ships named. The latter part of the album consists of about 13-17 small photographs attached to each of 6 pages, many of family and friends, identified only by Christian name. The house at No. 3 Aorangi Terrace is shown (lived in by Ernest Somerville, importer, in 1905-1906; and by George Jefferson Belt, tally clerk, in 1909), and a house in Hawkestone Street.
