Description: Shows a view along the Wellington shoreline, looking north. Part of Barrett's Hotel is shown on the extreme left, beside a classical revival building. There are shops in the distance. A red-coated soldier leans against the door to Barrett's Hotel. A small rowboat is in the sea to the right of the road Title on engraved plate on frame. Artist attributed because of similarity of subject to Holmes' "Wellington Beach 1856" (A-032-040). The work is not as finished as that one however. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Reclamation at Mussel Bay, between Port Chalmers and Sawyers Bay, 17 September 1873. Photographed by an unidentified photographer. The mayor Hugh McDermid, wheels the first barrow to begin reclamation at Mussel Bay for the proposed railway workshops. However Dunedin opposition won the workshops for Hillside, and the site became the 'old' recreation ground. Description: Shows a profile portrait of a three-masted sailing ship flying two flags from its mast tops. There is a steamship in the right distance, and Pencarrow Head and lighthouse in the left background. This painting was probably commissioned by the ship's three Wellington owners, or the Master Captain James Lee. The "Poneke" was built in Evans Bay, Wellington, in 1878 by John Rees George. She was 79.98 gross registered tons. Her length was 84.5 feet and beam was 18.9 feet. Initially registered at the port of Wellington on 19 March 1878, with her Master recorded as Stephen Ellis. She was owned by John Rees George, Civil engineer, 1878; Archibald McLeod, timber merchant, 1878-1880, William Waddell, Timber merchant and William Weir, timber merchant. Presumed to have foundered at sea with all hands (6) as she was not seen since being sighted off Greymouth. She had sailed from Onehunga on 11 June 1880. (Information from the seller, John Crowder, 1998) Accompanied by a loose card bearing the title "Poneke". To be mounted on the backing board. Description: Cadastral map of the entrance of Kaipara Harbour, from the Waionui Inlet, Papakanui Spit, South Head down to Mairetahi. Several placenames are given along the eastern coastline, Kawau, Pararaha, Waipiro, Haratai, Te Pua, Waioneke, Onumotu, Taumata, Karukanihui. Four areas are highlighted and their acreage given: Okaka (1851), Whiritoa (1558), Waioneke (5500), and Mairetahi (6300).
