Part of the Thorndon end of the city can be seen on the left. Courtenay Place runs away from the viewer in the centre of the scene, with Marjoribanks Street moving up Mount Victoria. The gasometers on both sides of Courtenay Place show clearly. On the far right in the distance is Wellington College. Description: Shows ships in harbour, houses, and a man driving cows on a hillside path at right. From Brooklyn looking across Te Aro and the harbour to the Hutt Valley. At left is a Maori wood-gatherer. Tree in left foreground has the creeper kie kie growing on it. A tree has been felled in centre foreground, and there is a cabbage tree at right. Upper Willis Street runs down to Clay Point, at the junction of the present Willis Street and Lambton Quay. Thorndon Flat lies beyond ending at Pipitea Point. Colour photolithograph of this original was reproduced for "The Barraud prints" published by the Alexander Turnbull Library Endowment Trust Board in 1967. The photolithograph was entitled: "Wellington from Brooklyn - across Te Aro and Thorndon, 1861". Description: Shows a general view of Wellington Harbour, probably from the position of the Bolton Street Cemetery. There are several dwellings in the foreground, a flagpole on the foreshore at the left, near a wharf which juts out into the harbour. The flagpole probably marks the site of Government House. On the foreshore at centre right, is a building with a square turret, with a pointed roof, probably on Lambton Quay The house roof in the left near section adjacent to bushes and trees may be those of the house of Robert Park. His house was adjacent to and below the Bolton Street Cemetery Inscriptions: Mat recto - beneath image - [Title]; (On edge of frame now discarded) - suggested date of around 1868. Description: Shows a view of Wellington and the harbour from the ridge above Mt Cook, towards the hills on the western side of the harbour. It shows the flat area of Te Aro with Te Aro Pa close to the shore and other buildings in the foreground. Plimmer's Ark is on the waterfront to the left just beyond the Clay Point cliff. The large church building on the left is St Peter's, Willis Street, and the large building on the waterfront is either the Maori or the Wesleyan Chapel in Manners St. Thorndon is in the background with Pipitea Point (now Thorndon Quay) and Kumutoto Spit (now Midland Park) both visible. Watercolours by Barraud, related to this view, but dated 1852, are at C-007-011 and C-007-007. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - C D Barraud / 1851 Quantity: 1 oil(s). Physical Description: Oil on canvas, 370 x 652 mm (sight) Provenance: It was sold at the International Art Centre by a private vendor who purchased it in Sydney from the estate of Germain Curvens (1926-1997), a Sydney art dealer who had reportedly owned the work for 30-40 years.
