Description: Three illustrations of scenes in the Wellington area. The top view looks north along the beach (now Thorndon Quay) towards Kaiwharawhara, with several houses along the beach, including the roof and front garden of Major Baker's. The central view, probably at Taita, shows the banks of the Hutt River, with Maori leaving Maraenuku Pā [Makahinuku Pa], overseen by soldiers. The palisades of the pa are to the right, with other buildings and canoes in the distance along the riverbank. The lowest view shows 'The red house' or the Barracks in Thorndon Quay, with soldiers marching up the slope towards them, another house and Tiakiwai Pa (described in Brees' text as 'Jackawai') in the middle distance. Description: Pencil sketch is a preliminary sketch for Plate 12 in "Illustrations to adventure in New Zealand" (1845), "Porirua Harbour and Paramatta whaling station, 1843", showing two food drying platforms in the right foreground, the curve of Porirua Harbour, and the entrance to Paremata Harbour in the right distance. Description: Shows a Maori man walking on the near shore to the right, and a pa on top of a low hill across the water. The Pa is Rangihaeata's Matai Taua Pa Copy of pencil drawing (115 x 185 mm) copied by Mary Marshall from original by W. Swainson. Matai Taua Pa, built ca 1845, was abandoned by Rangihaeata in 1846 when he withdrew with his men to Battle Hill to face British soldiers. Description: Shows a view of Wellington and the harbour from the ridge above Mt Cook, towards the hills on the western side of the harbour. It shows the flat area of Te Aro with Te Aro Pa close to the shore and other buildings in the foreground. Plimmer's Ark is on the waterfront to the left just beyond the Clay Point cliff. The large church building on the left is St Peter's, Willis Street, and the large building on the waterfront is either the Maori or the Wesleyan Chapel in Manners St. Thorndon is in the background with Pipitea Point (now Thorndon Quay) and Kumutoto Spit (now Midland Park) both visible. Watercolours by Barraud, related to this view, but dated 1852, are at C-007-011 and C-007-007. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - C D Barraud / 1851 Quantity: 1 oil(s). Physical Description: Oil on canvas, 370 x 652 mm (sight) Provenance: It was sold at the International Art Centre by a private vendor who purchased it in Sydney from the estate of Germain Curvens (1926-1997), a Sydney art dealer who had reportedly owned the work for 30-40 years.
