Description: Auctioneer sale map, with cadastral information, showing the property of Sir John Hall, bounded by Junction Street and Ferry Road, Phillipstown, Christchurch. Shows numbered sections for sale, with acreage and survey measurements. Some sections are marked 'sold', at 500 pounds sterling per acre. Some sections are marked for sale. Several other pencil annotations are written on the map, including notes about land tax assessment costs and acreage calculations. Two sold sections have two-storyed houses drawn on them.. Description: A cartoon showing Sir John Hall training his telescope in the direction of Athurs Pass (indicated by a signpost), while an old woman embodying "The Standard" newspaper, stands beside him. "Making New Zealand" comments that public opinion was in favour of the route to the West Coast being over Brownings Pass, but the "Standard" agreed with Sir John Hall.
