Description: Comprises logs kept by Fenwick: `Duke of Wellington', 27 Jul-28 Sep 1869, on a voyage from Portsmouth to Plymouth; on the `Bristol' 29 Sep 1869-10 Jan 1870 from Plymouth to Barbados, Bermuda and Trinidad; and on the `Clio', 22 Mar-30 Nov 1870, from England which included Madeira, St Vincent to Simon's Bay, to Wellington and Sydney. The `Clio' arrived in Wellington 27 Aug and left 3 Sep. The Duke of Edinburgh was visiting Wellington on the `Galatea' which was in harbour the same time as the `Clio'. Description: Photographs of various sailing ships including the flying squadron under Rear Admiral Hornby in Wellington Harbour on January 25th 1870. Also included are a view of Marsdon Hill Fort in New Plymouth with Mount Taranaki in the background and two views up and down Grafton Road, Auckland. Some of the images are very faint and two of them have been printed by Richardson. Description: Albumen prints of Fijian people, a photograph of Dunedin taken by J R Morris, and newspaper cuttings about the SS Mataura were inserted in the front pocket of the album. (The albumen prints have now been placed in protective sleeves and are housed in an envelope outside the album) Album of photographs, albumen prints of popular art works, maps, hand-written and illuminated programmes, and one hand-written poem, created by William Fox Wheeler between 1864 and 1869, during which he was purser on board the SS Mataura. Most of the art-works and hand-written and illustrated items were done by William Fox Wheeler himself. Items of unusual interest are listed below. A map "shewing mail services performed by the Panama, New Zealand & Australian Royal Mail Company, and lines connecting with the company's vessels at Panama" (between p. 46-47). Interspersed with albumen prints of popular art works such as "The Angel Gabriel", "Mother & child", "The Last farewell of Marie Antoinette", and "Fascination" are scenes of places visited by the SS Mataura in the 1860s. Numbers of images show scenes in New Zealand, many of which are unidentified. Several are small portraits of Maori men and women. The album contains a page with early New Zealand, German, Australian and United States postage stamps. A photograph of a painting by Gustavus Von Tempsky showing "`Waiari' scene of conflict with the rebel Maoris on the 11th February 1864" is on page 27. An ink and wash picture taken from Panama (p. 11) An albumen print of a painting of St Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Sydney when on fire in 1866 (p. 38) Photograph of the Wellington Custom House with the time-ball on the roof was taken in 1866 (p. 40) Hand-written poem "Padre Bandelli proses to the Duke Ludovic Sforza about Leonardo da Vinci", with "Leonardo da Vinci poetises to the Duke in his own defence" (11 p. inserted between p. 47 & 48) Handwritten and illuminated "Programme of an evening's amusement on board the steamship "Mataura" given by her passengers while on their voyage between Panama and New Zealand in October 1867" with water-colour painting of the Mataura at head of item (p. 54-55) Another programme dated September 1868 (p. 56) Another programme entitled "Temperance Hall. Description: Shows a view from near Flagstaff Hill, looking down on Russell and the Bay of Islands, with nine sailing ships with many flags anchored off the bay and one smaller steamship nearing the shore. Paihia is in the background, across the water Attributed by previous owner to Nicholas Chevalier who was an artist on an earlier voyage with the Duke of Edinburgh. However Chevalier was not on the 1869 voyage and the style of the work does not appear to be his. There is no known record of a visit by the Galatea to the Bay of Islands. The ship left Auckland and proceeded to Tahiti. It may have called at the Bay of Islands en route. Inscriptions: No inscriptions on the work itself. Title from mat (discarded by the Library) supplied by a previous dealer. There is an almost identical work in the collection of Auckland Public Library, attributed to J C Hoyte. It is unsigned. The title assigned to it is Looking southwest from Flagstaff Hill over Kororareka. It was formerly in the collection of the Old Colonists Museum, and came into the Library when the Museum closed in 1957. The ships at anchor are assumed to be the American whaling fleet. There are seven ships at anchor. A further, almost identical version of this painting has been identified, housed at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Massachusetts, in the United States. It is signed and dated 'C.H. [Kennett] Watkins / 1874', with reference number 2001.100.4397. (Information supplied by Lindsay Alexander, Russell, October 2014). Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Photographs of New Zealand, both North and South Islands, taken by Daniel Mundy between 1860 and 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p. 51). The views include a number in the Thames goldfields, with scenes of gold batteries, miners' huts, and a tramway. Mundy includes two rivers which are now differently named, the Tekihe River [i.e. Taheke River], and Tiremakau River [i.e. Taramakau River]. Quantity: 1 album(s).
