Evans, Malcolm Paul, 1945-:[Seabed and Foreshore debate] 25 March 2011

From: Evans, Malcolm Paul, 1945- :Digital cartoons

Reference: DCDL-0017397

Description: A man is almost knocked off his feet by the air rush as a huge wrecking ball swings over his head; in the lower panel he is seen to be representing 'NZ' (New Zealand) as he continues walking his dog and sighing with relief saying 'Thank goodness that's over!' He is unaware that behind him the ball which represents the 'Seabed and Foreshore debate' will be returning to endanger him again. Context - The controversial Marine and Coastal Area Bill (Takutai Moana) which was passed on 24 March 2011, repeals the Foreshore and Seabed Act of 2004 and restores the right to seek recognition of customary marine title in the common marine and coastal area through the courts. It sets out tests for proving customary marine title and also sets out the rights customary marine title holders may exercise, such as guardianship and development rights. The rights do not affect public access. Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei said "This is a very unjust outcome. It's the same outcome from 2004. The Maori Party have betrayed Maori voters and those who supported them in 2004". Colour and black and white versions of this cartoon are available Quantity: 2 digital cartoon(s).

Two men representing the 'Nats' and 'Labour' look at the doorway in consternation. Context - A capital gains tax is part of the Green Party's solution to reduce New Zealand's debt. The Greens are advocating a capital gains tax, excluding the family home, because we think that's an essential component of the tax system which is present in just about every developed country apart from New Zealand", he told Newstalk ZB. "(It) would make a significant impact in fixing up the governments books." Mr Norman says a capital gains tax would bring in over four billion dollars a year, enough to make a significant reduction to debt, and is also advocating capping government borrowing. Murdoch, Sharon Gay, 1960- :[Not dead, just really angry]. 27 April 2013

Date: 2013

From: Murdoch, Sharon Gay, 1960-: Digital cartoons published in The Press, Sunday Star Times, Dominion Post, and other publications

By: Dominion post (Newspaper); Murdoch, Sharon Gay, 1960-

Reference: DCDL-0024805

Description: The Mighty River Power shareholder is the Hydra, injured by a hammer and sickle attack, but whose multiple heads are still alive and angry. Mighty River Power shares reduced in value during April 2013 after the Labour, Green and New Zealand First parties proposed to buy back the shares once in government. The hammer and sickle suggests that these proposals were communistic. The mythical Hydra grew a new head each time one was cut off; thus the opposition could not kill the semi-privatisation of Mighty River Power. 'Hydra' also puns with Hydro-electric power, the product of that company. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).

Description: Depicts a man playing a pokie machine. Behind him is a mother and children pulling at his arm. A sexy tempting woman is sitting beside the pokie machine, and at the back of the machine is a businessman pocketing cash money and a builder building a convention centre. A 'Greens" Party man is trying to eat the pokie machine while a man wearing an 'L' badge representing the New Zealand Labour Party is standing on the foot of the Green Party man. Commentary from the artist: "My cartoon addresses the issues surrounding the deal struck between the John Key government and SkyCity casino in Auckland re funding a convention centre in exchange for the right to install a large number of gambling machines. Encouraging gambling is itself a kind of gamble. But then again the Convention Centre is a tempting payout." Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
