During the War he served with 27th Battalion in North Africa and Greece and was captured by German forces in July 1942 and was shipped to Germany as a prisoner of war. Description: Comprise correspondence, drafts of poems, reflections, reminiscences and stories of his life in Rumania before coming to New Zealand, and of his wartime experiences, research papers on plants and agriculture in Germany, copies of his certificates in agricultural engineering and plant research from Rumania and France, and newspaper clippings of his retirement in Hawkes Bay. His work as a plant pathologist and tree and forest management specialist with the DSIR and Forestry Institute is not covered in this collection. Source of title - Supplied Harry Jacks was born in Rumania and after gaining qualifications in plant research in France, came to New Zealand in the 1930's, where he worked with the DSIR and the Forestry Institute. During World War II he served with 2NZEF in Greece and on Crete, trained commandos and served on special operations in Yugoslavia and Greece. Retired to his farm at Havelock North in the 1970s. Description: The images record three separate events: 1. Leslie Verry's trip to Europe in 1939 as the world prepared for war. 2. The New Zealand Centennial celebrations at Waitangi in 1940. 3. A climbing trip to Tongariro National Park, easter, 1940. In relation to the Second World War, this album is interesting in that it has several photographs showing mobilisation in Holland, and troops on the move in Utrecht and the Hague following the Italian invasion of Albania in April 1939. It also has photographs taken in Kassa (Hungary) after the partition of Czechoslovakia. Description: Collection comprises material relating to Robinson's service in World War Two, particularly the Greece campaign. Includes a two page memoir of Robinson's involvement with a five truck convoy that transported ammunition, food rations and water to the Island of Chalkis in April 1941. Cargo was moved in anticipation that troops would use Chalkis Island as part of their escape route from the advancing German Army. Includes telegram, postacards, menus, patient discharge certificate (1942), medical certificates, newspaper cutting, Greek Ministry of Defence certificate and correspondence relating to war medals commemorating New Zealands who served in Greece, and miscellaneous papers. Also four page document regarding a police statement Robinson made to Waverly Police relating to a submarine he sighted off the Waverly coastline in 1986. Van Ginkel, Jack : Slides of holidays in New Zealand and overseas

Description: Jack Van Ginkel emigrated from Holland in 1951. Most of the slides record holidays taken by Jack and his wife in New Zealand and overseas from 1957 to 1968. There are also photographs of the Van Ginkel children, their home, probable relatives and friends from Holland, and the ADOS chemical factory, Petone where Jack Van Ginkel worked. The New Zealand holiday slides cover scenic views of the South and North Islands. The Van Ginkels obviously preferred camping and tramping holidays and there are a number of slides recording skiing trips to Mount Ruapehu. Overseas holidays included returns to Holland and visits to the United Kingdom, Greece and other parts of Europe, the United States, Central and South America and Australia. Description: Expanded from a student research exercise, `I had a funny experience one day' is based on interviews Penny made with her husband's uncle, Colin Robinson and extensive quotations from transcripts she made of letters and diaries he provided her. It provides an account of Colin Robinson's life, from his childhood and early manhood in Featherston to his experiences while serving with the 4th Field Regiment in the Greek and Crete Campaign and as a prisoner of war from June 1941 until the end of the war in Europe. There is a brief final section describing his training for the ministry and his reflections on his subsequent life.
