Reference: B-043-016-5-2
Description: On the left, a plan view of a fortified pa at Golden Bay. Rougly rectangular in shape, it is shown on a hilltop with a double palisade and two entrances. On the right is a side view of 'Section of walls near a gateway', showing a man crouched in a trench between two palisades, aiming a rifle through the base of the outer palisade. A lengthy note below explains the method of building palisades The image of 'Section of walls near a gateway' may refer to the pa at Massacre (Golden) Bay, or may refer to an associated lithograph by Heaphy Earthworks at Rangiriri, Waikato, 1863 (Copy held at B-043-016-5-1, or B-043-015-5-1). The note refers to the palisade protecting against shells or cannonballs, likely to be used by English troops, and not known to be in use against any pa in the Golden Bay area. However the Golden Bay pa shown appears to be a fully defensive one and is completely enclosed with a double palisade, offset entranceways, and a watch-tower Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - on backing sheet in pencil. C. Heaphy Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Lithograph of pen drawing and notes on cream paper, 246 x 382 mm glued to sheet 342 x 505 mm
Heaphy, Charles, 1820-1881: "Wikitoria (Victoria), a halfcast of Massacre Bay"
Date: 1844, 1848
By: Heaphy, Charles, 1820-1881; Fletcher, James Muir Cameron (Sir), 1914-2007; Bell, Francis Dillon (Sir), 1822-1898

Description: Watercolour by Charles Heaphy. Shows a young Māori woman, Meri Wikitoria Makarini of Massacre Bay. She is smiling gently, and is seated on the ground with her legs to one side. She is barebreasted with a cloak or rug covering her lower torso and legs except for the lower right leg. Meri Makarini was the granddaughter of Henare Te Keha, and the daughter of Wikitoria te Amohau and Fritz of Bremen (information from Tuckett correspondence, 12 April 1843 in Hocken Library's MS-0156, page 195?). She was baptised by Samuel Ironside on 15 January 1843. Parawhakaoho Pa (spelled on Heaphy's similar work in the British Library as Parawakao) was reportedly close to Collingwood (source of information unknown). Heaphy's very similar portrait in the British Library is dated 1844, so it seems likely that the work depicts the subject in about 1844, despite the date of 1848. In addition, Heaphy had land in the Motueka area, relatively close to Golden Bay, between December 1842 and 1845. However, in early 1848 he worked to re-establish the boundaries of native reserves allocated at Motueka and Golden Bay and may have met Meri Wikitoria a second time, making a copy of his earlier portrait. Title transcribed from item. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Charles Heaphy / 1848 This portrait is very similar to another in the British Library Add MS 19954, Folio 58 (68), titled "Meri Wikitoria [Meri Makarini] (a half cast) of Parawakao, Massacre Bay". Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 365 x 288 mm. Provenance: Previously from the collection of Sir James and Lady Fletcher who purchased it from John Leech Gallery in 2005. Previously owned by a Paris dealer, who acquired this work and four others by Heaphy and Francis Dillon Bell at a French country sale. Possibly originally owned by Francis Dillon Bell. The Library has acquired three other works from the collection, purchased 2006 and 2014, reference numbers C-025-025, C-173-001 and C-173-002. The 5th work, a panorama of New Plymouth by Bell is in Puke Ariki. Processing information: Description updated 30 August 2023 following information provided by a staff member.

Artist unknown :[Aorere, Golden Bay ca 1843]
Date: 1843 - 1850
By: Spooner, James Swinton, 1816-1884
Reference: C-030-019
Description: An extensive view from a high point over Wainui Inlet and Golden Bay, with a promontory in the right foreground, with Maori drying fish (including stingrays and barracuda) on racks, individuals and groups standing and sitting. Tata Beach is at the far left foreground of the picture, at Abel Tasman Point. A cabbage tree is in the left foreground. There are more fish-racks, tents and long canoes, some with masts and sails on the beach below in the foreground, with other Maori. A large European vessel in full sail is near the shore. Two other larger European ships and two smaller are out in the deeper water of the bay. A small island on the right may be Taupo Point, which is an island now only at high tide. It may also be one of the Tata Islands. The other island further away is one of the Tata Islands. The hills in the distance across the water are, to the right, the Wakamarama Range, with Mount Burnett on the far right and the Aorere Valley to the left of it. The highest peak on the left is Parapara Peak, and further to the left are the lower hills near Takaka. Purchased from description and assumed to be the work of Charles Heaphy, but seen to be too primitive in style for him. Another suggestion has been W. F. E. Liardet, but it is not his style. Also suggested has been James Swinton Spooner, an artist and surveyor with the New Zealand Company in Nelson in 1843. However, the Library has no other examples of his work with which to make a comparison. The Maori activities and the absence of any major European presence (apart from the ships) do suggest a date in the 1840s. Probably Tata Bay. Compare also Charles Heaphy's The Anchorage at Massacre Bay, with very similar terrain. Modern Aorere is upstream from the coast on the Aorere River. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Other Titles - James Swinton Spooner Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour on paper, 760 x 555 mm

Description: Golden Bay in December 1642, during the visit of Abel Tasman. A canoe of Maori men in the foreground, and two views of Tasman's ships, the Heemskerck and the Zeehaen (both flying the Dutch flag), sailing away in the left foreground, and surrounded by canoes and firing their canon in the middle distance. A rowboat (the cockboat of the Zeehaen) is between the two ships, with its occupants being attacked in the centre. Also in the left foreground can be seen the Heemskerck's pinnace towing the Zeehaen's cockboat back to the two ships after the attack. The hills of Golden Bay form a backdrop to the scene. The canoe in the foreground appears to be double-hulled. The rowers all have topknot hairstyles. The man standing on the right at the prow of the canoe is wearing a woven garment, covering his shoulders and tied at the breast, while the others have loin-cloths, and in one case, a garment that envelopes the torso. Other Titles - Aldus verthoont de Moordenaers Bay Quantity: 1 b&w photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph, 290 x 435 mm
