West Coast Mining album

Description: Very clear views of West Coast gold and coal mines (mainly in the Reefton subdivision), and mining towns, taken by unidentified photographers, except for one of "Wondrous Waiuta New Zealand" Jos. Divis Photo (p 27). Views on various roads include the Reefton to Blackspoint Road, Reefton to Westport Road, the Buller Gorge, the Maruia Road alongside the Inangahua River, Progress Road, and fording a river near Progress Mill. Images relating to mines include a winter picture of the old Wealth (of Nations) waterwheel covered in icicles; and gold batteries at various stages of development. Gold mines include the Progress Mine, Wealth of Nations Mine, Welcome Mine, the Mountain Battery at Boatman's Creek, the Blackwater Mine and the Globe Mine. Coal mines include views of Lanky's Creek Coal Mine, and the Lanky's Creek to Energetic coal tramway showing new bridges and coal miners. One photograph (p 9) shows several men "beach combing" for gold on the West Coast. Description: Shows the town's main street, with horse hitched outside hotel, a wagon going away along the street, Staite Bros Molyneux Store, an American flag hanging limp on a flagpole in the distance. There is a blacksmith's forge at right, a wagon resting on the road at left. Accompanied by an information text sheet, by Marian Minson. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - [Title]; Recto - bottom left - This facsimile reproduction of an original watercolour in the Fletcher Challenge Collection, Auckland, was issued by the Alexander Turnbull Library Endowment Trust in association with Fletcher Challenge Ltd, 1987.; Recto - bottom right - Edition limited to 3000 copies. Description: The collection covers mining buildings; interior machinery including the use of scales and smelting; miners both at work and posed for the camera; panning for gold; mine railways and the carts used on them; general views of the area; and other houses and buildings in the area. Also included are the building of the power house for the Talisman Gold Mining Company in Karangahake, a gold mine battery possibly in Karangahake, and a coach pulled by five horses possibly in the Karangahake district. Description: Collection consists of the papers of William Edward Hay; his wife, Mary Hay; his mother, also Mary Hay and his second son, Charles William Hay. Source of title - Supplied title William Edward and his wife, Mary Hay (nee Tindall) emigrated to Christchurch on the `Mermaid' in 1864. After eighteen months without steady work they moved to Hokitika where William tried his luck at the gold-diggings before taking up a permanent position with the `West Coast Times'. Late in 1871, the family moved to Melbourne but less than a year later they were back in New Zealand living in Dunedin, where William set up in business as a cabinet maker. In 1877, William's mother, Mary and eldest son, Benjamin, a dentist, came out to New Zealand. Shortly afterwards, William shifted to Auckland where he worked on the staff of the `Evening Post'. Description: Photographs of Rose Olive Langton, her sister Violet May Langton, and future husband Gordon Adams, and others, at Camp Creek on Lindis River, 23 September 1933. The photographs show panning for gold, and washing clothes, as well as a posed group portrait in the miners' camp (see Historical Notes). Included together with the photographs are captions describing the people in the scene and what they are doing. Source of title - Title supplied by Library During the depression of the 1930s, the New Zealand government subsidised unemployed workers who were willing to mine for gold in the hostile climate of the Lindis Pass area.
