Description: Drawn on a published map of Mayor Island to Poverty Bay with an extended portion of another map glued to include the area from Mayor Island to the Mercury Islands. The annotations depict extended river and partially smooth water limits at various points around the coastline from the Mercury Islands to Poverty Bay. The limit for Gisborne fishing boats extends from Cape Runaway to Poverty Bay. A reference key is included which states that river and smooth water limits are coloured blue and one area is prominently named Te Kaha river limits. Extended and partially smooth water limits are coloured red and three areas are prominently named Tauranga; Whakatane, Ohiwa and Opotiki; Te Kaha extended river limits. The Tauranga extension for fine weather only, at the discretion of the Inspector of Fisheries, is coloured green. 'Opotiki extreme limits' covers the approximate area between White Island and Whale Island. An additional area has been shaded green for the extended river and partial limit from Whangamata and Tauranga to Mayor Island, with details written in biro added at a later date. Also marked in biro are three anchorages for launches, one at Waihau Bay. 'George Siroper 9/1/25' is handwritten adjacent to reference key, at centre top of map. Signature hard to decipher. Description: A collection of map information from various sources from 1858-1892. The maps no. 1-6 and 8 contain information from Native Land Court plans of the 1880's, Survey Office road plans, Lands and Survey's first amendment (Mr Cussen's topographical survey), a map by S. Percy Smith, and the Sub-Atlas committee. The information has been added in different pens and hand writing eg "Plan marked from Hokianga" or "no track here shown by Mr Cussen". The map marked no. 7 shows military information from the New Zealand wars eg "Troops to be sent to Waikaremoana via Ahikereru - Ruatahuna Huiarau from Taupo". Shows some native tracks eg "from Heruiwi" and corrections or previous omissions. Map no. 9 shows tracks on N.L.C. plans, one of which "is away at the Court". The maps show very little signs of any settlement, except No. 3 and 6 "Tapuaeharuru Pa" and "Te Pueto Stn". A mission station, a native settlement and a school are also indicated. The maps cover the region from Hokianga, Kawhia Harbour, Mokau River, Waikato River, Tirau, Taupo to Rotorua on maps 1-6, 8 and Rotorua to Waikaremoana to Poverty Bay on maps 7 and [9]. All maps depict rivers. Map 7 and [9] are maps with annotations. They are on the published base map "Four-mile sheet, No. 10" (Wellington, New Zealand Lands and Surveys, 1935). Description: Photograph album of images taken by William Fitzgerald Crawford illustrating a trip to Waikaremoana and Nuhaka, Hawkes Bay, and Gisborne District taken between December 27 1897 and 4 Jan 1898 by Crawford, Captain Thomas Crisp, E Crisp, the Rev Edward Jennings, and driver J R Redstone. The album is likely to have been compiled by Crawford as he has made similar, but the annotations were possibly written by one of the Chrisps. The images include many scenic images of rivers, mountain ranges, waterfalls as well as images of camps, huts, ferries,horses, waka, dinghies, carts, hotels, bridges and people, including Maori groups, the men on the trip, a Chief Surveyor's party and other people they met. Ngati Ruapani and Ngati Kahungunu are the two principle iwi associated with the places identified in the album. There may also be other relevant iwi and hapu.
