Description: Photographs of and relating to the Wilson family ex Eketahuna. William M Wilson was born in Glasgow in 1868, coming to New Zealand when 8 years of age. He was apprenticed to John Fitchett, coach builder in Wellington, then with other firms including Rouse & Hurrell. He was employed by Wilfred Woolf in Eketahuna in 1894, and subsequently bought his business, and entered the firm of Kibblewhite and Wilson. See Cyclopedia of New Zealand, Wellington Provincial District, Eketahuna. Includes dwellings; carriages; group outings and portraits; 1 of the Club Hotel of F D Pelling; 3 of the Ryan family at Tawa Flat; 1 of a house at Island Bay, 1 of a thatched whare at Plimmerton, a Ghuznee St boarding house; 2 relating to the Burnett family; 2 scenes in Manakau; 1 of D A Greenlees store; 2 of Rarotanga; 2 relating to the business of Lyon & Blair, steam printers and lithographers; 1 of a group outside a house in Eastbourne; 3 relating to the Manson family; 1 of a military camp in New Zealand in preparation for the South African War. Also includes a pocket on the inside back cover containing newspaper clippings, and a photocopy of a letter written by the donor Mrs Helen M G Shaw, which gives some information about the album. Description: Collection comprises: Photograph of road works in Ghuznee Street, Wellington, ca 1950s, by Pacific Photos, Courtney Place, Wellington. 3 photographs of Seaview, taken from the top of the Wainuiomata Hill in 1950 by Wal Richardson. Album leaf with 5 photographs of Wellington, ca 1860s-1900s, including preparations for visit of Duke of Edinburgh to Wellington, wedding of Ted and Amy Yates, portrait of a woman, Te Aroha Bathhouse and fire damage in Lambton Quay. Duke of Edinburgh visited New Zealand in 1869. Cadman Bathhouse opened in 1898. Quantity: 4 b&w original photographic print(s). 1 album leaf with 5 b&w original photographic prints. Provenance: Donated by Wainuiomata Historical Society, October 2002, through Mrs Vicky Alexander. The photographs were given to the society by the late Mrs Claire Burdan, whose husband was descended from Richard & Mary Prouse, and from the Dixon family, of the Dixon aerated water business. The photographs appear to have come from these families.

Description: Adkin album. Wellington (2), nos. 241-441. Views of Wellington taken between 1950 and 1957. Includes harbour swim event at Evans Bay, 26 February 1950; speedboat contests at Evans Bay, 4 March 1950; Patent slip and the Union Steam Ship Co's wharf at Evans Bay; tulip Sunday at the Wellington Botanic Garden (15 October 1950); Evans Bay Yacht Club yard in use as a temporary base for Solent flying boats with the Ararangi at a mooring; various views of reclamation undertaken by TEAL for their flying boat service at Evans Bay, and flying boats. Many of the images in this album are linked with Evans Bay, as Adkin was living at 424 Evans Bay Parade in the 1950s, several images showing the house. Views of Wellington from the Mount Victoria lookout and from the Tinakori Ridge Radio Station, in 1952; the old Robert Hannah residence in Boulcott Street; views of the inner city including the upper end of Ghuznee St., Upper Willis St., the Children's Dental Clinic. Image no. 313 shows a house at 214 Upper Willis Street (known as Restwyn), taken in Feb 1953, while image no. 434 shows the same site in January 1957 after the house had been demolished. Numbers of images show preparations and decorations for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. There are many photographs of preparation for extending the airport at Rongotai, showing Moa Point Hill in course of destruction to provide spoil for reclamation, and also Rongotai Ridge, with one view of a house being moved from the ridge, also showing development of the breakwater at Moa Point, all taken betwen 1953 and 1957. A 1954 image shows an extension to the Town Hall under construction for municipal offices in December 1953; the Hinemoa at No. 1 Ferry Wharf; preparations and decorations for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in December 1953, including decorations at the Railway Station, Defence Stores Building in Featherston St., Kirkcaldie & Stains, James Smiths Corner, DIC, and the GPO. Image taken in March 1956 shows a house with turret on the corner of Upper Willis St and Aro St (a house which was shown in CD Barraud's painting of 1877). Views of yachting in the harbour, Ward Island, and the Eastbourne seawall. Outcast yacht is pictured.

Portraits in clude Laurie Denton, Tom Tolley (locksmith), Alfred Bennett and his family, Mrs Denton Snr, Mrs Waters (had a grocery shop in Dixon Street), G L Adkin (as a boy), Miss Dixon (of the aerated water family, the Dixons of Dixon Street), George Butler (artist), and Beaglehole (David Ernest Beaglehole, father of Professor Ernest Beaglehole, and Professor John Cawte Beaglehole). Also includes photograph of a portrait painted by George Edmund Butler of his father Joseph Cawte Butler (maternal grandfather of John Cawte Beaglehole).
