Description: Photograph album of New Zealand and Pacific Island scenes. Most were taken by George Dobson Valentine, in the North Island of New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti; a few were taken by the Burton Brothers in the South Island. Within the New Zealand scenes there are a large number of views inside and out of the Waitomo Caves; and another group show the area around Lake Rotomahana with the Pink and White Terraces before and after the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. Description: Album of tourist views of New Zealand and the sub-Antarctic Islands, chiefly taken by John Richard Morris, Jnr, circa 1890s. Places and subjects listed above where identified. The Sub-Antarctic Island views are all of native flora and fauna of the different islands, listed on the images as mollymawks, albatrosses, sea lions, crested penguins and erect-crested penguins On page 32 there is a view of the SS Knight Templar leaving Lyttelton on February 17, 1900, taking about 260 soldiers and 300 horses of the 3rd Contingent "the New Zealand Roughriders" to Durban, en route to fight in the South African War. Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Wallet of twelve concertina-folded photographs of Rotorua showing the Bath House, the Municipal Buildings, Fairy Springs, Pohutu Geyser, Boiling mud, Guide Rangi, Maori babies, entrance to Whaka[rewarewa], Ohinemutu from Hospital Hill, Poi dancers, "Tama-te-Kapua" carved house, and the entrance to the Government Grounds. Dated 1940s, as the Municipal buildings were newly built in 1940 when the Rotorua Library moved in there. No corroborating documentation in Wises directories 1930-1950s. Description: Photographs taken during the 1880s, chiefly by George Valentine, and Charles Spencer, both of whom visited Mount Tarawera before and after the eruption of June 1886. Inserted in a pocket at the front of the album are images cut from the paper "Newsview", June 1949, showing historic photographs of the eruption, and another double-page from the Weekly News (June 6, 1951) on the "65th Anniversary of the Mount Tarawera catastrophe". The latter article notes that mud, estimated at 75 ft in depth, covered a vast area. The album includes images taken before the eruption, and shows the same areas irreparable damaged. Many show the Pink and White Terraces, the village of Te Wairoa, and the massive rift in the mountain; also a group led by Sir James Hector to study the aftermath and changes wrought by the eruption.
