Description: Most of the New Zealand images relate to the Nelson family, their farms, farm houses, and farm buildings in the Pori area, north eastern Wairarapa, and scenic views of the area such as the Makuri River, a waterfall at Tiraumea, Annedale north of Tainui, the Pori Bridge, and native forest. The images of the farm houses include building a stable and buggy house, views of the yard with washing drying, a hen run, and a view of the dining room at "Ruatea". Four images are of Hugh Nelson's whare which was the first building constructed at "Taumata". There are three photographs of local Maori, one of bullock teams at Tiraumea, snow covered landscape at "Nga Mahanga", a picnic group with horses and buggys, and many views of the countryside from the Nelson farms showing cleared, partially cleared and forested land, much of it covered with the gaunt trunks of burnt off bush. There are group photographs of the families and friends. As well as the men these include women (wives?) Lucy, Katie, and Winifred, and children, Robert, Frances, and Dorothea. Other new Zealand houses include two probably located at Annedale with the names "Te Hoe" and "Manawa", and another in Featherston called "Newstead". Description: Scenic photographs of New Zealand taken by R.H. Bartlett, photographer who was working in Auckland circa 1875 to 1880. At the beginning of the album there is a fold-out page, opening into four full-sized photographs. Most of the images are of North Island scenes, including some of Maori groups outside whare, meeting houses, and a school with thatched walls and roof, and a view of the Maori pa at Ohinemutu. Most of the other views are landscapes, including the Pink and White Terraces, the Whangarei and Waitakere waterfalls; and hot springs at Lake Rotomahana, the Champagne Fountain at Wairakei, and the Crows Nest geyser at Taupo. Description: The two Nelson farms in this album are "Nga Mahanga" (Hugh Nelson's place), and "Taumata" (Jack Nelson's place). Views show the farm houses, and farm buildings, the farm land and landscape of the Pori area partially cleared of bush. One group of images shows the countryside under snow. There are a series of five images recording the building of a stables and buggy house, also a view of the woolshed and sheep at "Taumata". Scenic views of the area include the Makuri River ford, native forest interiors with pongas, and native forest. Four images show the interior of Hugh Nelson's whare which was the first building constructed at "Taumata". There are two photographs of local Maori standing beside tents in a bush clearing, one of army volunteers in uniform standing in front of tents, two of soldiers at an unidentified event, many of horses, some of hens, dogs, cats, and cattle. Two prints show one of the Nelson brothers cutting long grass with a scythe and 4 others are views of an unidentified house and its garden at Tiraumea (a distant view of this house surrounded by pinus radiata shelter belts and its surrounding countryside can be seen in album PA1-o-1206, page 7 captioned "Tiraumea"). There are also some images of "Newstead" the Monckton family home at Featherston. There is only one photograph of a Nelson family group. The rest are individual images of adults and children which include: Frederick Monckton, Lucy Miller (who married Frank Nelson), Winifred, [Lornie?], Dorothea, [Frances?], the brothers and the children. Description: A European man, probably Earle himself, seated on the banks of a stream, gazing towards a Maori village backed by a kauri forest. A Maori man is pointing towards the village (in which are food storage buildings and platforms), another is carrying Earle's baggage and two more have crossed the stream towards the village. Earle's text explains: "After ascending this beautiful river [the Waihou River, Hokianga] about 40 miles, and at a distance of two miles from the river is this village. It is literally buried in a forest, and is a country residence of Patuoni [Patuone], the chief of the district; here he plants his potatoes, cumera [kumara], and maize, which arrive at a perfection never before witnessed. The mighty forest by which the village is surrounded consists chiefly of cowdie [kauri], the largest and most valuable of the New Zealand trees. Description: Views of annexation ceremonies, of the local people and their leaders, of Lord Ranfurly and his party which included Naval personel from the Mildura who added presence to the occasions and raised flags during the ceremonies. There are photographs of two lepers on Molokani Island in the Penryn group and the Governor on a pearl shell diving boat on Manihiki. On the way back to New Zealand the Mildura stoped at the Kermadec Islands. Photographs were taken of Sunday (Raoul) and Macaulay Islands, and of the crater on Curtis Island. This part of the album ends with the Mildura in Lyttelton Harbour and the Governor coming ashore in a boat. Most of the rest are scenic shots of the Tourist highlights of New Zealand. There are three photographs of women crossing the Tasman Glacier and boiling a billy. The album ends with a group of photographs of the Channel Islands According to a note at the front of the album, all photographs, other than the New Zealand scenic tourist shots, were taken either by Captain Baynes or P M May, Surgeon, both of HMS Mildura. However, this is one of several albums recording the annexation of the Cook Islands held in the Photograph Archive. Many of the same images occur in all of them and a large number of these came from negatives held in the Malcolm Ross Collection. Malcolm Ross was a New Zealand Journalist who as the correspondent for the Times news paper, accompanied Lord Ranfurly's party on the Mildura, and was responsible for photographing the occasion. It was selected with some other items in July 1935 by Dr Scholefield, New Zealand Parliamentary Librarian, during a visit to Hampton Court Palace where Isabel Baynes lived. From 1935 to 1998 the album was housed in the New Zealand Parliamentary Library.
