Description: Views of the Mangatarera Stream and Mount Holdsworth opens a record of a climb to the summit of Holdsworth. The party consists of six women and about five men. There are views of the stream and the swing bridge leading to the Holdsworth track; several shots of the Mountain House with the climbing party arranged along the veranda, and Mr McGregor's party who had arrived on horseback to fix the water tank; the climbing party grouped in the bush on the way up the mountain and on the open alpine ridges; a surveyors tent in the alpine tussock; the party eating beside the Holdsworth Trig; views of the Tararua Ranges from the summit of Mount Holdsworth. Interspersed among the main image groups are photographs of a trip to Rotorua. This involved a group of people in two motor cars. There are images of the Hamurana Stream and Springs at Rotorua, and of children diving for pennies at Whakarewarewa. Views of mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe, the Mangaehuehu Stream, the Crater Lake and the crater on Ngauruhoe, and mountaineers crossing the ice field on Ruapehu and climbing Ngauruhoe. There is a view of Matterhorn Peak the name of which was changed to Girdlestone Peak in 1922. Two images of a surveyors' camp in the Waimarino Bush. The Tern Arch and Little Hawke's Crag on the Buller Gorge road. A view of Lake Tarawerea from the top of Mount Tarawera. The final photograph is a view along the beach to Pencarrow Head, Wellington. Pasted inside the front cover is a cutting from `The Weekly News', Wednesday, December 26, 1945, entitled `New Zealand's highest memorial' by JWG, describing the renaming in 1922, of Matterhorn Peak (Tongariro National Park) to Girdlestone Peak in honour of Hubert Earle Girdlestone after he was killed in action in August 1918. Description: Two copies of a letter from Monro to his daughter, Mrs Ada Morrison, describing his early life in Tasmania and in Hokianga, to which his father brought the family in 1835 and where his father engaged in the timber trade This collection contains two copies of the letter describing the author's early life in Tasmania and Hokianga and some family history. The first copy of the letter was donated to the Library in 1958, by Professor Arnold Wall (Acc 99993). This letter was originally bound in a blue pamphlet case and referenced at qMS-1378. Description: Photographs taken by John Dobree Pascoe and others in the Southern Alps, particularly the Westland Region. They include groups of mountaineers; routes traversing difficult terrain; views of mountains, mountain ranges and glaciers; deer stalkers and their catch; campsites, both in tents, and in caves (including Wilkinson Cave, in which prospectors, trampers and mountaineers have sheltered); fording swollen rivers; and mountain huts and life enjoyed by mountaineers. Album includes early photographs taken by C J Westland (1903), and a number of photographs taken by F A Kitchingham (1914). Particular trips taken include a new route from the Evans region to the Rakaia, discovered by J D Pascoe, Wyn Barnett and A P Thomson on 4th January 1933; the first traverse of the McKenzie Glacier, in rain (31st December 1932); and the first ascent of the McKenzie Col (31st December 1932). Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River.
