West Coast Mining album

Description: Very clear views of West Coast gold and coal mines (mainly in the Reefton subdivision), and mining towns, taken by unidentified photographers, except for one of "Wondrous Waiuta New Zealand" Jos. Divis Photo (p 27). Views on various roads include the Reefton to Blackspoint Road, Reefton to Westport Road, the Buller Gorge, the Maruia Road alongside the Inangahua River, Progress Road, and fording a river near Progress Mill. Images relating to mines include a winter picture of the old Wealth (of Nations) waterwheel covered in icicles; and gold batteries at various stages of development. Gold mines include the Progress Mine, Wealth of Nations Mine, Welcome Mine, the Mountain Battery at Boatman's Creek, the Blackwater Mine and the Globe Mine. Coal mines include views of Lanky's Creek Coal Mine, and the Lanky's Creek to Energetic coal tramway showing new bridges and coal miners. One photograph (p 9) shows several men "beach combing" for gold on the West Coast. Description: Album containing 1928 souvenir booklet celebrating New Zealand's first Commerce Train, which travelled through Auckland Province between 26th October 1928 and 4th November 1928. Souvenir number of the Commerce Train News, published by New Zealand Railways. Bound in with the book are photographs taken by an unidentified passenger on the trip. There are photographs in the booklet, which include several portraits of men on the trip, photographs of farmland, dairy factories, cement works, Arapuni Hydroelectric works showing the dam and the spillway, kauri forests, trains and cars, and group photographs of the personnel. Gifford album 5

Description: Photographs of a group travelling in two Darracq automobiles, photographed by Algernon Charles Gifford. Probably a trip taken by Gifford and friends along Lake Pukaki to Mount Cook [in 1907]. Views show the cars on the road, fording rivers, and negotiating rough patches on the unsealed road. This album appears to be linked with Gifford albums 2, 4, 6 and 7. An undated article written by Gifford `To Mount Cook by motor car' (pasted in the back of Gifford album 2, at Pa1-o-182) was written for the Oamaru Mail. It describes the trip in detail, and this album appears to follow events spoken about in the article. The other albums show the party in the mountains, with mountain views, scenes of the group crossing the Tasman Glacier, and relaxing at various spots, including at Ball Hut and Malte Brun Hut. Description: Photographs taken by Charles Tenison Salmon about 1906 to 1909. Images include views of the Ohakune/Horopito Road, a Christmas camp in the bush at Ohakune, the volcanic eruption of Mount Ngauruhoe in April 1909, and views taken when traversing the Tongariro National Park. Some photographs show Charles and Marie Salmon in the bush, and one shows three climbers, Charles T. Salmon, Edward Phillips Turner and Hugh Girdlestone. Views on the Ohakune-Horopito Road show a team of horses pulling an empty dray, and one of a group of people waiting while their carriage crosses a ford on the Mangatoetoenui River. Description: Views of and from the Long Lookout Homestead owned by Charles Hunter Brown, and adjacent areas around Nelson City. These are followed by scenes of a 10 h.p. "one lunger" motor car on a six day tour from Nelson to Christchurch, and a cutting from the New Zealand Freelance decribing the trip. The car was driven by Willam Graham Vining, with Lucy Malanta Hunter Brown, Mrs W Sutton, and Miss B Humphries as passengers. Probably linked with Charles Hunter Brown albums at PA1-o-238 to PA1-o-241, in which the captions are all in the same hand-writing as those in this album. Description: Alpine, bush, valley and mountaineering images taken by various photographers in the South Island. While there is a typescript inventory, many of the sites are unidentified, including images numbered 1-7, 27-141. There are two major sequences, one taken by Edgar Richard Williams (signed ER) when on a trip up the Rakaia River with T.T. Gough in 1917 (information from internet) (image nos. 10-11, 14, 18-26). Some of these have notes on the back added by John Pascoe at a later date. The other main sequence shows an expedition to Mount La Perouse in 1932. This sequence was possibly taken by William D Frazer (from information on internet), although it is possible they were taken by Jack Mitchell (John Wesley Mitchell, Snr). The La Perouse expedition included mountaineers Tom Sheenan, Alex Graham, Marion Scott, Jack Mitchell, Louie Roberts (Mary Louise Roberts), and Anne Stevenson. Images numbered 6-7, show a large group of men, possibly members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, or the New Zealand Alpine Club (either the Canterbury or the Otago branch). John Dobree Pascoe is visible standing in the middle row towards the right. Most or the men are seen in front of a mountain hut, while three men are perched on the roof. The last two images are sterescopes from an "Earthquake series" published by W.S. Smith, showing earthquake damage in San Francisco in 1906. They are No. 317 "Northeast from Fifth Street", and No. 318 "Portsmouth Square". Most of the places identified are listed above. Quantity: 150 b&w original photographic print(s). Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Description: Alpine views, chiefly taken by Harold (Ned) Porter, circa 1923 to 1927. The first two photographs were taken by Swiss guide Marcel Kurz who accompanied Porter. Interspersed with Porter's photographs are a few taken by Dr F W Vollmann, a German archaeologist who spent some time in 1909 climbing in the Southern Alps. The last photograph (no. 157) was taken by H O Frind. Inserted between photographs nos 075 and 076 is a slip with hand-drawn map of the Bonar Glacier Plain showing climbing routes, the Matukituki River and Saddle, Mounts Bevan and Joffre, and positions of campsites used (by Porter?). Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks. Ring album 2

Description: Most photographs taken by "CR", probably James Ring's son, James Claude Ring. The whole album consists of views of a state visit to the West Coast area by Premier Richard John Seddon in 1906, and includes views of his arrival on the first train for the opening of the extension to Lake Mahinapua of the Hokitika-Ross Railway Line in January 1906, with large gatherings of people, and a view of Seddon deliviering his address. At the beginning of the album scenes show his arrival by boat at Greymouth, followed by scenes along a route to Kokatahi, with a large party of dignitaries travelling by coach and horseback. Many views show the group fording wide rivers; with scenes of welcome by roadmen, miners, old identities and local farmers at various homes and towns. One view shows members of the party gathering rata. A deputation of men is seen at the residence of Sam Fergurson (Ferguson, farmer at Waitaha (near Mt Hercules)); a large party at Gunn's (Alex Gunn, proprietor of an accommodation house and Post Office at Wataroa (Whataroa)); a group of old identities gathered at The Waiho; a group of roadmen at the Mt. Hercules road; and scenes of a reception for Seddon held at Kumara. A series of photographs show the touring party on the Francis Joseph Glacier (Franz Josef Glacier). Wairakei album

Description: Album of photographs relating to a trip taken by a group travelling on the first "Motor Reliability Contest" in 1906; probably created and in part photographed by Robert M McKnight. The contest involved ten cars (4 Daracqs, 2 Cadillacs, and 1 Rover, 1 steam car, 1 Oldsmobile and 1 Leyland) travelling 400 miles from Auckland to Taupo and back. Photographs relating to the contest, including scenes photographed during the trip are on even numbered pages from 2 to 36, possibly taken by R M McKnight in 1906; odd numbered pages from 1 to 63, were taken by unidentified professional photographers, circa the 1880s to 1890s; all relating to the route taken on the 1906 road contest. Most of the earlier photographs are scenes in the thermal area around the Wairakei and Bay of Plenty Regions and include images of the Pink and White Terraces taken before and after the 1886 Tarawera Eruption. One of these earlier images shows "Macandrew and party at Wairakei." Views of the Motor Reliablity Contest show scenes taken on the route; groups of people involved; lineups of all ten cars; and one car fording a river.
