By: Scoop (Firm)

Refers to the appointment of Ian Fletcher, a childhood friend of the Prime Minister. Doyle, Martin, 1956- :[Spies on toast]. 24 April 2013
Date: 2013
From: Doyle, Martin Maurice Michael Thomas, 1956- :Digital cartoons
By: Scoop (Firm)
Reference: DCDL-0024625
Description: Shows John Key, seen from behind, in discussion with Ian Fletcher. Key says "As a politician, Ian, I like to find compromises" while Fletcher replies "That's good, John, because as your good buddy at the GCSB, our intelligence service will be compromised to its core." Refers to media debate over the appointment of Ian Fletcher, allegedly a friend of Key's, to the role of head of the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB). Accompanying note from cartoonist states: 'The irregular recruiting of Ian Fletcher by John Key for the GCSB job introduces the 'poison' of political capture to a body that needs to be unbiased and clear-headed. My cartoon depicts the nape of John Key and the face of GCSB D/G Ian Fletcher, over breakfast. The title 'Spies on toast' is meant to suggest spies having been totally outwitted, captured, compromised by the National Party's John Key.' Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
Doyle, Martin, 1956- :[Spying on New Zealanders]. 17 April 2013
Date: 2013
From: Doyle, Martin Maurice Michael Thomas, 1956- :Digital cartoons
By: Scoop (Firm)
Reference: DCDL-0024556
Description: Shows an intellegence officer reporting the discovery of 'a highly organised snake pit of foaming lunatics trying to shaft our economy, flog off everything they can, and even root the school system!!!' Ian Fletcher, newly appointed head of the Government Communications Security Bureau, tells him to relax because, 'You just happened to tune into Parliament'. Commentary from the artist: 'As the law is currently being changed to allow the GCSB to spy on New Zealanders (which until now they could not) it opens the question as to who the 'enemy' is. If the GCSB is going to spy on dodgy people working against our national interests, then there's an emerging list of people of interest for them to start with. The cartoon depicts an imaginary GCSB agent, and an off-screen Ian Fletcher, DG [appointed by National govt John Key] of the GCSB.' Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).

Description: Titled 'Put on the dreadful spot', with a despairing scream the Prime Minister, John Key, vanishes into a hole as a reporter with a tape recorder attempts to question him. In early April 2013, there was perceived cronyism over the appointment of Ian Fletcher to head the GCSB. Mr Key handled the matter badly, claiming a 'brain fade' and giving contradictory stories. His tendency to be 'relaxed' and 'forget' inconvenient things when questioned was becoming more apparent. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
