Description: A rough sketch with a view from Thorndon, looking towards Lambton Quay, and Te Aro, with Government House and its flagpole in the foreground, the waterfront (Lambton Quay) with several houses visible, Clay Point indicated and Mount Cook beyond it, with the Barracks. Bush with either tree ferns or cabbage trees is indicated in the near foreground. There are three ships in the harbour Attribution: attributed by the Library on cataloguing, 1980, to H J Warre. However the handwriting is not that of Warre, and the style appears less precise than his. This is one of four drawings in the same hand, with the same provenance, (A-172-013 to -016) one of which appears to be a preliminary drawing for a watercolour by Colonel C E Gold. Description: A view of a busy Port Chalmers harbour, showing various unidentified steamships, sailships and rowboats. Notable landmarks include the flagstaff at the top of Aurora Terrace; the Holy Trinity Church in Scotia Street; and Iona Church in Mount Street. The road winding from the port towards Carey's Bay can be seen on the right, with a man and woman travelling along it in a horse-drawn trap and with a dog running behind. The intersection of Grey Street and George Street, the port's main street, can bee seen in the distance D Robertson, the artist, is likely to be David Ogilvie Robertson, son of mariner and marine artist Captain Thomas Robertson, who resided in Port Chalmers. It is uncertain as to whether David Robertson was also a captain, but his 1898 painting of the 'John Wickliffe' in port and the 'Philip Laing' arriving with the first settlers landing in Dunedin, is stylistically similar Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Port Chalmers 1878 - Capt. Description: View from a rocky foreshore, with a bush-clad headland to the right, looking across to Kororareka (now Russell) with several houses along the beach at the town and, at the west end, the large hakari built to celebrate the visit of Governor Grey at Christmas, 1849. Rising above the hakari (large food storage platform or scaffolding) is a series of hills with a flagpole on top of the highest hill Compare the wood engraving illustration of the same scene from A. S. Thompson's The Story of New Zealand (London, 1859), with caption Kororareka in 1849 from a sketch by Colonel Bridge. The location of Bridge's drawing or watercolour is not known. The wood engraving includes the carved prow of a large waka on the far right, and another large waka in the water being rowed into shore. Williams' pencil drawing includes a very small waka on the water. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - title in ink Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: View of a large house, newly built on Victoria Avenue, Wanganui, New Zealand. The near side shows the exterior wall of a conservatory, and the shadow of a flag can be seen at the top of a flagpole. The house sits alone in a cleared pastoral landscape facing Victoria Avenue. The extent of its section is indicated by plantings of young trees along the boundary. A broom hedge can also be seen on the near boundary.
