Description: A survey party in the Tararuas doing reconnaissance for the Southern Crossing seated outside their makeshift tent drinking tea. Amongst the party were W H Field (far left), B C Aston (far right, who may have taken the photograph) and Frank Penn. (A Library client has reason to doubt the description with this item. The lower image was taken at Cranmore Lodge, on the hills above Dunedin, in February 1892. Top right, the couple stand by the ticket office, both wiping tears from their eyes, and making extravagant gestures. William Field has a case labelled Wellington at his feet.
