Original owner was James Gough who purchased 128 hectares (known as Nesslea) in 1864. In 2007 the 'Essendon' portion of the estate was owned by his great-greatgrandson Paul Keith Jarman and his wife Ann. Description: Papers include: Drawing of The Homestead, Claxby, 1991 (on postcard); pages copied from `Ninety years - Some memoirs' by Marmaduke Spencer-Bower, ca 1999 which cover the history of Claxby. Claxby has been farmed by the Dixon family since 1852 when Marmaduke Dixon took up 6,480 acres between the Waimakariri and Eyre Rivers. In 2005 the property was owned and farmed by Richard Marmaduke Spencer-Bower and his wife Margaret. Richard is the great grandson of Marmaduke Dixon and son of Marmaduke Spencer-Bower. Description: A single-storey house surrounded by a fence, with a shed or further house beyond it, a conical hill and other foothills of the Southern Alps in the near background. A figure with a pole over one shoulder walks along a path to the right towards the house. The house is surrounded by cultivated fields. Another building and possibly a haystack are to the right. Arowhenua is close to modern Temuka, South Canterbury, on the Opihi River. Tarahaoa is the Maori name for Mount Peel, possibly the conical hill behind the house. Mount Peel is some 40 km distant from Arowhenua and appears closer in this view than the location of modern Arowhenua would suggest. Description: Travel journal kept by a Mr Pontifex, apparently a lawyer in Brisbane. Records his travels to the Australian outback, New Zealand, Europe and Britain. Describes travel from Brisbane to St George Qld (1886); Christchurch to Blenheim (Oct-Nov 1889), involving a tour of sheep stations on horseback with a friend, recording names of stations and owners, notes on scenery and state of roads; Christchurch to Hanmer via Kaikoura (Dec 1889) on foot or by coach, with similar descriptions; North Island Jan-Feb 1890, with visits to Maori villages, including Parihaka, where he met Te Whiti. Described in some detail. Other passages record trips to Europe. At the end of the book is a resume of his extensive travels.
