Description: Photographs of a range of industries in New Zealand, possibly related to the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906-1907. Industries include animal related products including wool, from fellmongery to transportation and finally weaving; meat works, including the slaughter house, the mutton cooling room, shipping fozen mutton, the beef cooling room; butter, at the Hautapu Butter Factory, showing butter in the factory, and delivering butter at Ngaruawahia Railway Station; the Waikato Bacon Factory, and pig carcases. Other industries include flax, with scenes showing a flax mill, carting flax to the mill, stripping, washing and drying flax, and also grading hemp and loading bales of it at Auckland wharves; kauri timber industry, from felling the trees, hauling logs by bullock, floating logs over the Wairoa Falls, sorting timber at the mill booms, timber mill on the Wairoa River, and a million feet of sawn timber at the mill. The latter part of the album shows scenes of gold dredging on the Buller Gorge, hydraulic gold-mining at Ross, Westland; coal mining at Brunner; kauri gum diggers and a warehouse storing kauri gum; and finally views of the Sugar Refinery in Auckland, and a warehouse filled with sacks of sugar. Description: Two photographs of Duntroon Railway Station with Campbell Street next to it; men working on the railway near Duntroon railway bridge; the railway bridge at Duntroon; the bridge over the Mangaroa River with some old track next to it; looking down the platform at Palmerston North Railway Station with goods trains in the yards, a passenger express train at the platform, the Railway Hotel on the right and in the distance the businesses of Barraud & Abraham and A Loufresne, builder; Middlemarch Station with the Railway Hotel and a Billiard and Sample Rooms on the right; Fairlie Station with a coal train on the left; and steam locomotives including the Rotorua express at Morrinsville station. Photographer was Muir & Moodie. Two have a stamp, or part, in German on the reverse. Description: Subitled `Life of a Trade Union "Boss"', Collins tells the story of his family background and his participation in Anglican church affairs, his trade union activities which rose from his employment in railways, and politics, chronologically. Norris continues with his narrative from when they moved to Wellington ca 1963 up to the present day. An index, in the form of contents, lists the various categories by which the autobiography is arranged. A full curriculum vitae is supplied as a bibliography, listing Collins' appointments, church positions and overseas travel. Alun Richards contributed the foreword. Relationship complexity - One unrestricted copy also at Beaglehole Room, VUW Norris Collins arrived in NZ with his family in 1926, living in Heathcote, Christchurch. He attended Christchurch Technical College, became a projectionist and in 1936, an apprentice boilermaker at Addington Workshops. He was also very active in Anglican church affairs which has continued throughout his life. By 1950 he was deeply involved in trade union affairs which ultimately led to several trips abroad and to his becoming a member of parliament. About 1963 the family moved to Wellington and Collins continued his active participation in trade union and church affairs. He was active in VSA, ALAC, a JP, marriage celebrant and received the OBE in 1976. Life at the work-sites is shown with types of accomodation, including tents; work-sites under snow; and group portraits of the Midland Railway Rifle Club, and the New Zealand Midland Railway Football Club.
