Description: Aerial views, exterior views and interior views of the Gear Meat Company at Petone, between 1955 and 1963. Includes sheep in holding pens, various areas of the meat works showing activities such as skinning, whole carcasses, various stages of preparation for packaging meat for the local market and for transport overseas; further products including canned meat; tallow; hides; wool; and fertilizer. Vehicles for the transportation of meat include ships at London Docks unloading frozen carcasses, and a fleet of delivery vans for the local wholesale trade. One photograph shows Prince Philip (the Duke of Edinburgh) visiting the meat works in 1956, coincidentally at the time of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Gear Meat company. Different Gear Meat Company shops are shown, in Jackson Street, Petone; in Upper Hutt; and at 94/98 Lambton Quay. The first `Primary Fresh Foods' shop opened by the company at 12 Bunny Street, Lower Hutt, is seen on opening day with a delicatessen section as well as meat department. There are exterior and interior views of the different shops. A number of views show hostel accomodation for meat workers, showing exterior views, a bedroom, a kitchen for communal use, and a social hall. The final section shows the Gear Meat stall at Hutt Valley Industries Fair, 19-27 August, 1960; and their stall at the Manawatu & West Coast Agricultural & Pastoral Association Show in November 1962. An envelope inserted at the back of the album contains views of sheep holding pens, further scenes of the interior of an abatoir, and one view of the Gear Homestead. Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1912 and 1914. Images include Godber's family, a few of identified people (names listed in the name file), and many with no identification. One image of a group of fitters and turners apprentices at the Petone Railway Workshops, taken in 1913, has all the apprentices named (listed in the full record for Godber negative, APG-0457-1/2) Views of the old Central Fire Station at Petone, and the new Petone Fire Brigade Station; the aftermath of a huge fire at Cooks' Cooperage (on January 14, 1914); and a locomotive which had rolled. Local Petone scenes include the Petone Council Chambers and town clock, and a number of houses in the area, including the home of Godber's friend Tom Mather; Korokoro bush, and the Korokoro Reservoir. Away from the Wellington area, Godber photographed a number of houses in Clonbern Road area; the Makatote Viaduct and the Manganui-o-te-Ao Viaduct. Description: Photographs, chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, including family portraits, areas where he lived, Petone and the Petone Fire Brigade, railways, the Hutt Valley, Wellington, and areas in the upper North Island. The family photographs show his immediate family (his wife Laura (nee Zinckgraf), and children William Albert and Phyllis Mary); groups including his father and mother Charles and Mary Ann Godber, his brother Harry Leonard and wife Annie and their daughter Constance Alice, and Laura's brother Charles Albert Zinckgraf. Godber was a fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade, and there are photographs of groups of firemen and fire fighting equipment, and displays of methods of fire fighting. Associated with Godber's work with New Zealand Railways, and particularly at the Petone Railway Workshops, there are views of various workshop buildings, groups of railway workers; one of M J Mack (General Secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants of New Zealand); images of damage to rolling stock after railway accidents; trains; the Raurimu Spiral; railway viaducts; logging railways; and railway stations. Photographs taken in the northern part of the North Island include coal mines, rock formations, hot springs at Te Aroha and Kamo; Whangarei and the Wairua Falls; suburbs of Auckland including Newmarket, Remuera, Parnell, Onehunga, and Ellerslie Race Course.
