Description: A helicopter in Christchurch flies over newly constructed boxes, representing buildings, out of which ugly humanoid faces leer. A comment from the helicopter is 'Not ugly...Just architecturally challenged!'. The new buildings being put up in the aftermath of the Christchutrch earthquakes and demolition, owing to the constraints of excessive earthquake standards and cost, were drab, cheap-looking and unimaginative. The defence by some of their unnoticeable beauty seemed strained. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).

Nisbet, Alastair, 1958- :[West east]. 10 May 2013
Date: 2013
From: Nisbet, Alastair, 1958- :Digital cartoons
By: Press (Christchurch, N.Z.)
Reference: DCDL-0024814
Description: A signpost pointing 'West' and 'East'. The sign pointing West is intact; that indicating East is broken and barely hanging on to the post. Refers to the condition of Christchurch City after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011; the western wealthier suburbs were less damaged than the poorer Eastern suburbs. Also, progress on repair and rehabilitation of eastern housing had been slow. The redesign of the city centre seemed to be a western suburb priority which ignored the poverty and misery of living conditions on the east. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).

Description: Two inspectors from the EQC check a house where both the occupants and furnishings are coated in snow. They confess "we might have trouble ignoring the condition of this place!" but as the cartoonist comments, "they'll still try!". In post-earthquake Christchurch the inhabitants found the EQC to be overly restrictive and rigid in their assessment of earthquake-damaged buildings, even though bad weather (and the snow storm of June 2013) had many homes barely habitable. Colour and black and white versions available Other Titles - Evans, Malcolm Paul, 1945-:"Established in a conservation estate...likely to harm our unique flora and fauna..." 31 May 2013 Quantity: 2 digital cartoon(s).

Reference: DCDL-0025473
Description: Two members of an unnamed council planning department are talking about the "Inquiry" into the building consents on projects planned and designed by qualified architects and engineers. They hope that the "Inquiry" will 'find some fault with our works' because 'we can't have people thinking our oversight is redundant!' The cartoonist's comment is 'Cryptic logic'. In May 2013, International Accrediation NZ started an assessement and report on the issuing of building consents by the Christchurch City council and the failure by the Council Chief Executive, Tony Maryatt, to manage the consenting department and to keep the Coucil informed. In July 2013, the IANZ withdrew the Council's accreditation to issue building consents. Quantity: 2 digital cartoon(s).
